I just bought a Crusader on ebay and it is on it's way. I do have a few questions:
1. I plan to display it suspended from the ceiling in an inverted position, bay doors open. Do the doors lock open or will they need to be secured another way? 2. What is the umbilical made of and is it still considered a requirement for the ship to be complete? I have no intent to by one as they are comically expensive and not really functional considering I can get some 10 gauge solid core wire that will do the job for a couple bucks. I look at it along the lines of o-rings, black horses, and string. It's just a losing battle as the material breaks down over time. 3. I'm looking for a booster from Defiant to go with it. How sturdy is the booster in space station configuration ( assuming good condition) and could it safely dock with the shuttle if both were suspended in the air so that each has it's full weight on it's own suspension rig? Thanks for any advice. Very excited about my new piece. |

1. Yes, they should stay open.
2. It's made of wire. A piece of 10 gauge might do it, but finding the exact thickness of the sleeving can be hard. I work with reels and reels of wire and haven't found the perfect one yet. I wouldn't worry about it. 3. I'm not sure what you mean. You want to hang both from the ceiling while the shuttle is docked on the booster's airlock hatch? If so, I wouldn't think that would be wise.

What I mean is, if I bought a listing that said it was "complete" then I would expect to see the umbilical. It's not a box or a file card, it's an accessory so its absence makes the unit technically incomplete. That said, it's just wire. Go buy the hardware store's wire and move on with your life. I have the original umbilical with mine and it's not anything special to behold. 3. No idea, I've never owned any part of a Defiant.

Most Crusaders do NOT mount onto the Defiant booster. The early release still had the clip that attaches to it but they quickly changed it up and removed the mechanism cause it wasn't needed. The other thing removed on the Crusader was the lifting mechanism for cockpit cover.
The Defiant, it is an arm connection so you can lift the canopy and it'll hold up. The Crusader just comes off. For the rear, the doors are so stiff, it will hold open. The umbilical cord, I can't remember, but back when I had both these vehicles, I actually had found a replacement cord from Home Depot, but it was so long ago, I have no idea what size it was. It is just wire so you can bend it to different shapes and it'll hold.

I just realized you wanted it docked in Space Station configuration.
My comments were for attaching it piggy back onto the Defiant Booster section. I can't remember how the space station docking was done so I can't comment on it.

Thanks so far guys. I had never looked at the booster before and while waiting for a meeting checked it out on 3djoes. Very Impressive. Just wondered if it would safely work at all on aerial display in space station set up with the crusader docked.
As far as the umbilical goes, there isn't a chance I'm paying the going rates for original, so no worries there. Just reading through old posts and wanted to see if there was any new info for replacements. Like I said in the first post, to me the wire appears as replaceable as an oring or black tubing. Not to take away from those who seek original |

Yeah, when I had a Defiant, I had the original umbilical cord. I knew someone who had a replacement one that looked identical to mine. However, he was such a completionist that he paid $50 for mine just so he knew he had the original one and he gave me the replacement. Unfortunately, it was so long ago that I just can't remember what the replacement was.
I think the difference was that the original was a solid copper wire inside the sleeve and the replacement one he had was stranded wired inside.

I can't really offer much that hasn't already been said, but I can say that the original is solid wire. I don't have mine handy, but will try and get a calipers on them and get back to you. I know if you don't want to wait, if you get some thick sheath of any close size will give you some wiggle room to hold it into place.
On the Booster, it isn't something that is very sturdy. I don't know how it would work in a hanging display opened up. The inside section doesn't really lock into place very well in any other position other than when it's horizontal. You would have to modify it IMO to display it in how you want (and that I'm thinking you want). Would be a sight to see displayed in that way. When you get it set up, would love to see some pictures. roron corobb |

So I'm reversing the yellowing on the Crusader, and I seem to have hit an impasse. I've gone the Salon 40 route and she is now yellow free. However, the nose has a layer of gray-ish coloring that just will not go away after two days of treatment. It's not factory, because the spot where a sticker was is noticeably lighter. Any suggestions?

I wonder if old 10-2 electrical wiring would work for the umbilical. Just strip out the white wire. If you could find some old wire, maybe from the 80s, it might fit better since I seem to remember older 10-2 having thinner insulation than newer wiring.
