Hey, guys. I have a question for the community and to see if there is anyone else in a similar place as me.
I collected joes in the late 90s through the early 2000s. I began selling my collection a few years before 2010. I sold 95% of everything I owned, including a massive unopened vintage collection and a smaller loose collection of figures. I never really bothered to sell the vehicles, because of the hassle, excluding the ones that were worth enough money that selling them was worth the trouble. For example, I sold my Terrordrome, Night Raven, etc. plus smaller vehicles for army builder, such as all my Stinger jeeps. HOWEVER, I did keep around 5% of my collection. As you can tell from my username, Python Patrol was my focus. I kept my entire sealed set of Python Patrol figures plus duplicates (13 total moc figures) and my misb PP Stuns (2 of them) and loose ASP and jet (it's been so many years I forget the name of the plane). I also tucked away modest box of my other favorite things, probably around 50 great condition figures and their filecards, a mint Stinger jeep with box, and some other stuff. But here I am over a decade after having sold most of my collection except for the Python Patrol sealed figures and small box of other figures. All this other stuff is not listed in my collection for sale thread and never has been. That for sale thread at this point is down to just a few filecards, but I am wondering: IS THERE ANY REASON TO KEEP THIS BOX OF STUFF? WILL I EVER CARE ABOUT GI JOES AGAIN? WILL I EVER COLLECT AGAIN? SHOULD I JUST SELL IT, TOO? Is there anyone else on this forum who is still here who's already sold their collection and have thoughts or regrets on doing so?

I have sold a significant amount of my stuff. I had thought I would quit collecting all together. Sold off all my troop builders, Oktober Guard, then started selling some of my main figures only to regret a couple sales specifically. Now I have boxed up about 150 or so figures. I am still buying but only figures I really want. I don’t have anything displayed at the moment except for a single carded Law figure I just received. The way I look at it is this. Many people have sold off things to turn around and buy it all back spending more money trying to find it again. If you don’t need the cash, why make a hasty decision. Give it six months or a year and see how you feel. As for myself, there are way to many hard to find pieces I have acquired to just let go of. It would be twice as hard to find them, and cost way more money than I’d like to spend. I’m going to refocus, pick up a few things that are still coming out this year, then probably be on pause until the next movie comes out anyway. It almost seems like we are all going to hit a mandatory time out on new product weather we like it or not anyway.

A lot of great perspectives on that very topic in this thread:

I just recently sold off all my vehicles and playsets, along with a fair amount of figures. I kept probably 20 or 30 "core characters" that I couldn't part with. I made some good money on it, and freed up a lot of room in my collection.
Looks much "cleaner" now, and there's no more stress in hunting down some of the more expensive vehicles (I'm not an "opener", so boxed vintage vehicles in reasonably good condition are pricey, hard to find, and take up much space). |

Thankfully I was able to find a great Zartan recard on Ebay, so I could finally have a sealed 1984 Zartan without the box.

Hey Guys,
It seems as alot of people are to starting to sell their collections. When I started collecting as a hobby back in 2005, besides the GI Joe stuff that I had left from when I was a kid, my goal was to get all of the US o-ring figures that were pictured in the James Desimone figure guides. I completed all of them in about 2 years. I still had the desire to continue collecting so, I just went after the stuff that I really liked, and that's the way it's been up to this point. I've never really went after the really big vehicles, as it gets really hard to store that stuff. I would encourage anyone to collect the stuff that they really like, as it can get really stressful to have that "I got to have everything mentality". I just thought I'd share my own testimony on the subject. Thanks, Everett

I've sold my collection twice. 1st time I jot a few things and end up rebuilding cause of the few things I kept. 2nd time, I sold all my vintage stuff cause of money and space. Had all the big stuff like Defiant, Flagg and Terrordrome too.
Now I just have modern stuff.

I think it's important to just stand back, look at everything you have (and want), and ask yourself which items got you back into collecting, which items hold nostalgia for you (something you either had or wanted ), and which items were just impulse buys or something you got to complete a set.
There's a great video on Youtube where a collector describes his three phases of collecting, which I think really sums up how many of us fall into certain traps. |
