I got into Joe collecting relatively late, around 1991, and I only ever bought (or received as gifts) 13 vehicles from retail. My final vehicle was most likely the GI Joe Razor Blade helicopter. I liked at the time that it was classic colours - olive drab and black - and not some bright garish neon. The string 'flying' gimmick was kinda interesting, but it was also very easy to disconnect that feature and use it as a normal toy chopper. I still have it.
Do you remember your final vehicle from retail from the ARAH years? What was it? How did you feel about it, and do you still have it? |

1990's Locust. I was aging out of GI Joe at the time. At that point my money went to CDs and batteries. I no longer have my original, but I have one I just restored as well as the one that came with the General.

The Cobra Pogo Ballistic Battle Ball. I was 15 and feeling the pull away from toys big time. When I bought it, I was thinking it was silly, but could be as neat as the Trouble Bubble. But it was just silly. I couldn't get past that and didn't buy another vehicle until the 25th Anniversary line.

My first vehicle was the Vamp. I still remember sitting in the car in the parking lot and my mom reading Clutch's file card to me "and he still calls the women chicks". It met it's end in 2nd grade when a bigger kid stomped on it. A few weeks later he was picking on a smaller friend of mine so I kicked his ass. I believe the Vamp stomping fueled my fire in that one.
on edit, I misread the question. That was my first vehicle. My final was Destro's Despoiler. I bought it purely for gold head Destro. I still have that one.

My final vehicle of the ARAH run was the Mudbuster. I was 12 at the time and still a huge Joe fan but began becoming self conscious about making my love for GI Joes known (if that makes sense) - if the Mudbuster had come in a different color I think collectors would look upon it a little better (as is the case with most of the 91-94 figs and vehicles).

My last purchase was the Septic Tank. I was still fairly young at the time, maybe 10? It was just a matter of availability by that point. I still wanted Joes, but I didn't like the later crazy ranges, and the Battle Corps figures weren't locally available to me.

The S.L.A.M.
I was so enthused to see the APC and Grand Slam make a return in issue #59, that I just had to have that crazy-looking artillery system to tow behind mine! (I think I got Tunnel Rat along with it.) |
