Hmm, good question. Brings up alot of memories, too...
I distinctly remember feeling the need to back-off from G.I. Joe during the summer of 1989. I was leaving middle school and heading on to high school, therefore I was becoming "too old" for G.I. Joe toys. And I had just purchased Deep Six (Version 2)...it was truly the end of an era for me. I basically moth-balled my entire collection, and back then I thought I'd never look back. So I guess that was the last figure I bought from the RAH era. I knew I had moved-on about a year later when I visited the local Walmart that had just been built, and I wandered over to the toy aisle...which back then was near the front of the store, which seems odd, now that I look back on it. In reminiscing, I remember scanning the action figure section and seeing all those new Joes...Capt. Grid Iron, Bullhorn, Rampart, and now it seems so surreal, to think about those new Joes...they're still so new to me and unfamiliar, all those brand-new characters that I should have excitedly added to my ranks...and I left every single on of them hanging on the racks, and walked away, never looking back. Now that I look back on it from where I'm at now, it seems so sad that I had given up something so cherished and familiar to me so easily. Some years later, before my dad passed-away, my mom had told me at some point it was sad when I came back home as a married man and I loaded-up all of my old G.I. Joe figures and vehicles and took them to my new home, the apartment I shared with my new wife when I moved-out. She later told me that it had made my dad sad to see it all go...he made the comment to her that with all of my old G.I. Joe stuff gone, it was as if I was never there at all, like it was a nice little reminder to him as well of my fun memories collecting and playing with it all. And of course I stupidly sold most of my old stuff off when I discovered eBay, making those memories even sadder for me... So nowadays I guess part of the reason I collect and hang on to stuff is because I don't want to lose or turn my back on cherished memories any more, and I want preserve that old feeling I used to get when I would have all of my stuff set up in my bedroom floor, and my dad would pop his head into the door and just grin, seeing how I was enjoying all that stuff so much. Or maybe I want to remember what it was like when I got that latest issue of the comic and read it over and over again, wondering if they were gonna come out with any of the characters I had read about (of course they were), and...I can remember how excited I used to get when my big brother would come home from a trip to town with my dad, and he'd tell me about all of the new G.I. Joe figures he had seen at the store, and when he got a little older and began working, every now and then he'd even buy me one or two figures and bring them home to me... *sigh* I didn't mean to take all of those feelings and memories and just throw them all away on a whim, but I did. You know how kids can be...so maybe now I'm making-up for temporarily giving-up on something that meant so much to me and sparked my imagination in such a big way. Heck, I used to think someday I'd even join the military...I wanted to join the Marines just like my uncle did, and G.I. Joe played a big part in that notion for me. I wouldn't make it because of a health issue I discovered in high school, but...G.I. Joe represents alot of what makes me who I am today and dwells in alot of great memories I have to this day. So I guess Deep Six was just the last figure I bought before a temporary lull in my collecting and appreciation of all things Joe. Sorry, guys...I didn't mean for this to turn into some kind of therapy session. (lol)

Sorry, guys...I didn't mean for this to turn into some kind of therapy session. (lol) No need to apologize! I totally get where you are coming from. Their is a certain emotional/nostalgic attachment we have to the GI Joe brand. I remember feeling much the same way you did back when I was between middle school and high school - I still secretly loved GI Joe but felt I was "too old" to enjoy playing with toys. I kind of became the steward of mine and my little brother's GI Joe collection in the mid-late 90s. It wasn't an impressive collection - probably 70 figures between us ranging from the mid 80s through the Battle Corps Era. I still brought them out from time to time and played with them in high school. My senior year of high school I discovered ebay and actually began collecting alot of the items I had or wanted as a young kid. A year or two into college I pretty much sold off everything for beer money - a move I now regret. I did hold onto the 2000/2001 Collectors edition joes and some of the vehicles that came out - I still have those figures as well. I actually got into the SpyTroops/VvV line but then just focused on the TRU exclusives or any of the two packs that had utilized the original 3 3/4" mold along with the comic book packs since they also utilized the same mold (except for the shrunken heads). Eventually I got into the new mold joes as the 25th anniversary figures and vehicles were released and last fall ended up getting rid of all my new mold figures on Ebay and went back to collecting anything from the original 82-94 run, the 97/98 TRU exclusives, the early 2000s collectors figs/vehicles and the figures/vehicles from the VvV/Spy Troops era that were classic o-ring joes. During my glorious run from September into February of this year my whole collection was overhauled and for whatever weird reason I was able to somehow tap into memories of my childhood and I was remembering things that I had not even thought about in 25+ years. It's just weird but cool how something has simple as a toy can help you recall memories from your past. And now I am sorry for my therapy session lol. |

Well, grunt was my first went to Woolco with my mom in 1982 and run to the toy section and there they were. They were putting them on the shelf as I was standing there and I remember looking at that card art being amazed. I grabbed grunt and run to find my mom to beg her to buy it for me. And I was the biggest fan and collector all through the 80’s. And then I stopped through the 90’s, but my last was bats.

I think it was Ken Masters from the second Street Fighter series of figures. If they don't count, I'm pretty sure my older brother bought me Alley-Viper v3 for a birthday present. I think I was 5 when the series came back,
I'm actually surprised my child brain comprehended that Joes were not CORPS, and suddenly I needed Joes, CORPS were no longer good enough. I continued to receive Joes as presents, until I was buying them myself. I think my only break was around 2005, and I came back for the 25th anniversary. |

I believe mine was Mega Marines Gung-Ho. Or Cyber-Viper. Or maybe both!
I never really played "GI Joe" but used the figures as a huge cast for my own games and fantasy worlds. This is why the initial "Sci-Fi"ing of Joe didn't bother me too much as they just fitted in with my Star Wars stuff. But at this time, all the neon guns and play-doh put me off. It was becoming more childish as I was also growing up and getting very old for toys, so needed to stop buying "action figures". IIRC there had been a long period of peg warming Sonic Fighters/Talking Commanders, so this was the final straw for me. (My first figure was technically Red Laser/Cobra Commander - As a UK person I originally collected Action Force) UKS |

My final figure from the original RAH run was Crimson Guard Commander. It wasn't so much up to me "growing up" or "getting to old" for action figures, I continuously collected throughout my life regardless of what others thought, it was more that the standards of GI Joe were no longer meeting my expectations. GI Joe was moving to space or including action features that decreased the articulation which was one of the things I really loved to begin with.
It wasn't until much later that I even knew the line ended in '94, or even that it got really whacky and included aliens. None of that interested me, I was willing to take a lot in my GI Joe, but by then there was a lot more stuff taking up my time and interest. |

The last "really great" vintage figure for me was Storm Shadow v2. I was probably in 9th grade, and bought him on the downlow, since buying Joes in high school wasn't done back then. Kids don't know how good they have it today, with nerd culture being mainstream. Can't say I recall seeing girls in the comic book store or arcade back in 1989 lol.
Storm Shadow v2 is still my favorite sculpt, and I love the repaints of him (the red Ninja Viper from the comic pack, the camo figure from the Cobra Ninja Strike, etc). Loved the color scheme, and still the coolest accessories (red sword and backpack, the claw and compound bow). |

IIRC, mine was '88 Shockwave, but I also bought a Phantom X-19 with b-day money when it first came out, so I'm pretty sure that was my final childhood toy purchase. I always wanted a G.I. Joe jet, but was never able to snag one, so when I saw the Phantom and I had the cash, I jumped on it. And that was even though I was already getting out of toys. Sad thing is, I didn't really enjoy that jet because I was just simply moving on...it was fun putting it together and sticker-ing it, but then it just sat there, doing not much of anything, until I sold it at a garage sale to buy school clothes the next year.
