Kmart
Target La Belles (later called Best) KayBees I would get dropped off in the Columbia Mall at Kaybees and be in there while my parents shopped elsewhere in the mall. (this was the eighties before Adam) I put a few things on Layaway at the local Coast to Coast. The Dragonfly and the Vamp for sure. I think I got some at the PX AAFES on base too. All the other stores were 30 miles from home. We went into "town" maybe once a month. Shopping was a treat. I picked up some Joes in a TruValue or Hardware Hank on vacation more than once.

We didn’t have ToysrUs or Kaybee (no Kmart, Walmart, or Target either) in Anchorage during my GI Joe heyday, I bought most of my beloved Joes at Carrs and Fred Meyer. Going to the lower 48, I always hit Toys r us, and I was so jealous about Night Force. By the early 90’s we got TRU and KB, but I was pretty much done buying Joes.
Also, Joes were everywhere in those days, so I looked for Joes everywhere. I remember finding some older figs at a hardware store once, so I was always hopeful in every kind of store. Last edited by Stalker; 03-23-2018 at 08:01 PM.. |

Kmart was my go to story. It was just down the road from where I grew up. Toys'r'us was a ways from me but every now and then we would venture over to one.

Woolworth's was within walking distance of my house and my main Joe store as a kid. I have great memories of that store, but their poor selection is probably a big reason I got into collecting as an adult. Growing up I never got to see any of the main characters (like Flint, SE, Duke, etc) in the wild so I never had them. In 2007 being able to have better versions for the first time as an adult was too good to pass up.
My mom refused to ever take us to TRU sicne she said she couldn't buy us anything anyway - which only made the place more special to me and made me want to go more. When I was 12 I started to bike the 7 miles there with my buddy Jarrod even without money just to go and walk around. There was a Children's palace across the street that eventually went out of business. But man, what a great road (bike) trip for two boys being able to bounce between those two Meccas while it lasted! My 8 year old son found out TRU was closing down and he got really upset. I've made a special point of taking both my older boys just for fun trips and events. He's made his own memories at the exact same store I loved as a kid. He felt better after we signed some petition to save TRU. Last edited by Dod Ear; 03-23-2018 at 08:32 PM.. |

Troy, AL we had a Big K (not to be confused with Kmart) before it was bought out by Wal Mart and a TG&Y that I got most of mine from. Sometimes would find some at the Super X drug store.

In my little town, it was K-mart, Kay Bee toys, Gibson's, TG&Y and Revco Drugs. I have been nostalgic for Gibson's because it was like walking into Vintage Toys R Us. They had these long Toy isles with toys to the roof. K-mart was okay. When Kay Bee came in, I was so freaking excited to have a toy store in my little town.

Child World and Hills were for me. There was a Toys R Us near a Child World, too, but c'mon, one looked like a castle! Hills was the best. They always had plastic display cases with little scenes for Joes, Transformers, Star Wars. Half the fun of each visit was seeing if there was a new setup. I remember how the action figure aisles felt so big as a kid, like the pegs stretched all the way to the ceiling way up there. I don't know if it's because things are mostly in the six inch scale now so there isn't as much out, or just because I'm twice as big now (vertically, and sadly, horizontally) but TRU lost a lot of it's magic for me. Think I bought more figures from Walgreens than TRU in recent years.
K-Mart, Gold Circle, Kaybee...good times. |

Service Merchandise was awesome. In southwest PA (Pittsburgh area) my favorite was Children's Palace. Family Toy Warehouse and Hills were good for Joes too.
I still remember saving up and buying my Flagg at the Children's Palace in Bridgeville. It is now a Sears scratch & dent. Every time we pass it I tell my kids the story of when I bought the aircraft carrier there. Hill's usually had the best selection in my area, but Hart's also had a decent size department. Also had a Heck's and Big Wheel across the river, but we didn't get over there so much. Eventually we got KMart, and there was Circus World at the mall. By the time I first visited Toys R Us, I had stopped collecting GI Joe. Nor was I into Joes when FTW existed. I was very close to buying a Flagg with my birthday money one year. Went to Hill's planning to get it, but decided to buy various smaller vehicles instead. I also recall the reaction my dad gave when he saw I was buying four Vipers at Hart's . Had to explain that they were soldiers, not all the same guy. |
