Cobra was always portrayed as speaking English, but perhaps that's just because the writers only spoke English, and figured that the audiences only spoke English! With Cobra's background (Baroness from some Eastern European region; Zartan likely from France; Storm Shadow from Japan; Tomax & Xamot from Corsica; Darklon from somewhere in the Alps; and who knows where Wild Weasel, Scrap Iron and Firefly are from), the leadership lacks a lingua franca. With Cobra's aims being global domination it stands to reason that they recruit globally. Maybe they have some kind of pidgin language, like Esperanto (once used by US Aggressor forces: When the Army Spoke Esperanto | WeaponsMan), and then applied that to vehicle markings (http://www.2ndbn5thmar.com/sop/MarkingSOPMcBreen.pdf).
So while the letters were likely just artistic renderings, they could be from Cobra's variation on Esperanto. Call it Coberanto! |
