Hey all,
I found this beauty in my mom's basement and had a few questions: 1) What is the best way to remove the rotors for shipping? 2) The rotors are warped, (see photo). Should I leave them like this or attempt to straighten them out? 3) If the latter, what is the best technique to straighten them out? Any guidance / opinions are welcome! Thanks, Rich Kennedy |

in between the blades there is a small hole, very gently and carefully use a small screw driver or other flat tool to pry it apart, but only barely. Just enough to slide the blades out. It won't take much to get the blades out of the rotor hub. Don't try to pry the entire hub apart as that will break it.
I had to do that a few years ago when I put my Tomahawk into storage. If it'll fit in the box, it might be best to leave it alone just put enough peanuts or paper in there to keep it from moving around much and it should be okay. There is a few ways to straighten them out, some people use a hair dryer to warm them up enough they are "bendy" then place them between a pair of books to cool and straighten. Another way to do that is with the steam from a pot of boiling water. Of course be very careful with boiling water. Afterwards run cool water over the blades, dry then place between books other some other large heavy flat objects. |

Just don't make the mistake I made. I popped off the top half of the of the rotor hub. It worked perfectly until I re-assembled and realized it didn't hold as tight so the top pops off when the rotors hit anything.
As for straightening the rotors, I would only work on the ones that are bending upwards to get them to bend downwards. That's actually how it looked in the movie too. Even if you straighten it, it'll start drooping again anyways, so that's why I say just straighten the ones that are bending the wrong way. Because it's so old, I don't know how it was kept and if the plastic is still as soft or not, but I would run it under really hot water for a while so it softens up. Then you can bend it down (or it'll drop down on it's own). When it's how you want it hit it with cold water to harden. In my experience with this, if the thing was originally straight, it'll start bending back down when it's hot enough already so you wouldn't even really have to bend it yourself.

my only amendment might be, don't hit it with "cold" water after the warm, this is thirty year-old, and only god knows what plastic. warm it up then hit it with Luke to room temperature slowly and bring it up to cool. shock will shatter.

True...was used to giving that advice for new stuff...like most of the Star Wars stuff nowadays that always seem to come with something warped.
