Hey Guys,
Need a little advice on the best way to clean up an old Terror Drome. I wasn't looking for one, but I stumbled across one for sale that I was able to purchase for a great price. It is complete and minus a few stress marks, all the doors are in working order with no major breaks. It's a bit dirty and needs a good scrub, plus I am thinking of replacing the decals. I'm hesitant to try and take it apart given how fragile some of the plastic tabs are. Is there any good advice for how to give this thing a good cleaning? Is it worth trying to take it apart? Thanks. If your not willing to take it apart I would recommend sticking it in a kiddie pool and giving it a sponge bath. I definitely don't recommend taking a hose or anyting with any higher pressure than your typical shower head. As far as sticker removal I definitely recommend it as nine times out of ten once you start washing you will have some peeling. I use either Goof Off or ronsonol lighter fluid which sounds crazy but works well and dries really quickly. Just obviously don't be smoking while working with it LOL. Great find by the way. Even if it is gross right now. Getting one complete and unbroken right off the bat almost never happens. After you have it all good clean and sticker free give it another good rinse. Now from here you can get some repro decals and start applying or some people swear by wiping it down with baby oil and re washing or products like Wipe New that are suppose to rejuvenate the plastic. I only use the baby oil once and I don't feel like it didn't make a big enough difference for the extra amount of work. I used the wipe new product on an 89 Kenner Batmobile about a year ago and it still looks new very clean.

Guys,
Thanks for the tips - after posting this I found formbx257's YouTube video where he walks through putting the Terror Drome back together. I reversed his instructions and was able to get it pretty well disassembled and started cleaning the parts. It definitely makes a difference seeing the parts shiny. I was most hesitate about taking off the hinged doors that fold down, but fortunately, they all popped out easily without breaking any of the tabs/plastic. I was having trouble getting the blue cobra symbols off of the top command center, and decided to soak it in warm water in the bath, and they eventually popped out nicely as well. I was a little apprehensive to start taking it apart after reading how fragile the plastic is, however, if you go slow and are careful, the disassembly isn't impossible. I found that I could slide out the side walls near the rotating side doors, to release the tension on the top hook to get them out without any risk to the tabs. I'm now contemplating whitening the command area a little. Once I got the stickers cleaned off, you can tell the plastic has yellowed. I'll have to wait for the weather to get a little better, but I might do the peroxide bath on it to see how it comes out. Thanks for the tips. |
