Hi Everyone,
I realize the question may be a bit misleading, but I'll try to explain as best as I can: Post-1994, are there any figures that you could put next to the 1982-1994 Joes and have them blend-in reasonably seamlessly? The reason I ask is, in the past couple of weeks I've bought a lot of old Joes, but I've also bought a couple of newer ones which I thought would blend in (I was going by the pictures on YoJoe.com and the pics on the Amazon/Ebay auctions), but which turned out not to after all. For example, I'm looking at the '97 line up and I'm almost 100% certain they're just like the older 0-rings, but am I right? What about post-97? Thanks! |

In my opinion 94 is the cutoff but I'll bet many tankers think earlier

If you are going by O-ring build, then 1994 was the end of the vintage ARAH line. It looks like from 1997-2002, there were o ring figures that were just Hasbro giving Collector's a few figs here and there. Then the new sculpt era started in 2002. It looks like O-ring figures were still being made as GIJCC exclusives from 2002 to 2010. I still think of the end of vintage ARAH as 1994 though.

I would say the end of the original run - 1994 would count as vintage.
The 97, 2000, 2001, 2002 ARAH releases all seem to be widely forgotten or just not as revered as the original 82-94 run of Joes. Their were also alot of original construction o-ring joes released from 2002-2006 either mixed in with Spy Troops/VvV mold troops or as TRU exclusives (Python Patrol/Tiger Force/Night Watch/Cobra infantry etc.) To me any of the original o-ring mold joes that were released up until 2005 I would have no issue with them being categorized as vintage. |

simple distinction:
vintage = 1982 - 1994 o-ring = 1982 - 2000-and-whatever when they stopped. |

1994 works as a nice, defined cut off for the vintage line. However, the vintage molds were reused up to 2009-ish for repaints, etc.first by Hasbro then the club. As far as Im concerned the repaints are considered part of the vintage line, but to each his own. Hasbro started packing in the new build figures in with the old. I got Skullbuster(Range viper repainted purple and white)packed in with a new build heavy duty. Took Skullbuster and gave HD to my son. So, I guess my answer is yes, as long as the figure was made using the vintage figure build. Skullbuster, NF Beachhead, TF Beach head Wreckage and Black Suited Serpentor have all made my display case. Gotta watch the skin tone on the later figs though, the plastic looks decidedly meh sometimes.

1997 - 2002 is an odd case, since they aren't technically "vintage", but at that point they were only recycling existing vintage molds/sculpts for their figures. However, they were using flexible plastic for hands, unlike all the "true" vintage figures. I categorize everything from 1997 - 2002 as "vintage" and store them with my vintage figures, but I understand why some folks don't consider them vintage.
Once the New Sculpt era started later in 2002, I classify everything from that point on as "New Sculpt", even the figures which use vintage-style parts instead of new sculpt parts. I will use New Sculpt items alongside vintage items; I just don't categorize them as such and store them separately.

Thanks for the replies!
I think that I may have caused a little bit of a confusion by using the word 'vintage' as opposed to 'o-ring' in the thread title. So, basically, am I correct in assuming that all the figures from the '97 line as seen here: 3 3/4" 1997 G.I. Joe Action Figures are LIKE the vintage (though they're not strictly speaking vintage figures themselves)? Am I also correct in assuming that the last figure that was 'like' the vintage figures was Big Lob? |

Yes. The 97 line as well as any line up to 2002 were constructed using the same molds and style of the original ARAH run. These figs will blend in with the original run as far as construction goes. 2002 introduced a new type of figure construction, but there were still some of the old style figures mixed in and the old style will stamd perfectly with the original figs.
As far aa Big Lob goes I don't think he ever had a classic build figure.l |
