In mid-1996, I was in eastern TN and stopped by a local Big Lots. They had stacks and stacks of Joe Armor Bots, Invaders, and Starfighters. They also had a fair amount of the Armor Tech figures too.
I was just starting to dabble in collecting and had no idea these were even released in the first place. I didn't get anything that day as I was wanting "regular" figures at the time, but in hindsight I should have at least grabbed an Armor Bot, haha. I still want one.

I'm from Sheboygan, WI and we used to have a stor called Evan's. I got a Cobra Condor Z-25 there in 1990 and wanted the Defiant that was there so badly but it was too expensive for my Grandpa to purchase. Jump forward fifteen years and there is an Even's in our sister city Sheboygan Falls and they deliberately shelve things in package much later than their original release. I remember seeing the mechanized machine packs and accessory packs well into the early 2000s. The last time I was there, maybe two years ago, they still had a couple 12" RAH Joe products, CC and Destro, on the shelves. I passed because I have them both. And they were marked up pretty good.

i picked up some Star Brigade and Battle Corps figures in...1994-1996 and left them MOSC. and a Shark 9000 in 1995 still MIB.
1989-1990 haul from a Ben Franklin and drug store (don't remember the name) in small town southern Illinois: - Hydrofoil Moray - Viper - Barbeque - BAT - Leatherneck - Low Light - Torch - Mokeywrench - Law and Order plus 1985-1986 Transformers i mostly cleaned out in 1988; MASK; Wheeled Warriors...good times. i found a Wheeled Warriors accessory pack at TRU in 1992 on clearance for 47 cents; it'd been resealed but complete. i just dug it out at my parents' house to display at mine. - |

I found a 1985 Transportable Tactical Battle Platform at the tail end (Christmas) of 1987. It was in a very small town TrueValue hardware store. When I saw it I felt like I was Indiana Jones discovering a lost artifact. Back in those days where I lived (rural southern Missouri), it was pretty rare to even find last year's stuff on the shelves, let alone product almost 3 years old. I begged my parents for that TTBP. My Mom took me to a store right next to that TrueValue while my Dad bought it and snuck it to the trunk of our car. A few weeks later I opened it on Christmas morning. On a sidenote, as rare as it was to find older product back then, my local Wal-Mart did have quite a few 1985 USS Flaggs still left that Christmas '87 season. They were marked down from $100 to $50. I begged for one every day, but my parents told me "It's too big"...and they were right, but damn.

The Defiant Complex stuck around at TRU until 1992 from what I remember. But no one calls it the Crystal Ball of vehicles! |

Those big play sets we covet now were got necessary great sellers. I recall the FLAGG being at Toy R Us into 1987-1988, also reduced in price by then.

I'm thinking Walmart must have got some overstock deal from Hasbro in 87, as it seems like I've seen a LOT of stories of how stores that season got a ton of prior year stock like Skystrikers, Flaggs, and Terrordromes at discount.
And I've been seeing these stories from multiple sources for MANY years.

As late as Christmas of 1988 two of the local Hill's Department stores had the USS Flagg. The few K-Mart stores around here never had any large vehicles, not even in the early years. I think the mobat/mauler was as large a vehicle as they stocked. They were like that atleast until 1992, when I stopped collecting. K-Mart was great for figures, but horrible for vehicles.
They built a TRU here in either 88 or 89 after the Children's Palace store burned down. TRU was the only local store I ever saw the Defiant at. They still had a few left when the Crusader shuttle came out. A real oddball find, was in I think 89 or 90. I don't remember exactly when but that Ninja Turtles were big. And the Dollar General store in town had Ninja Turtles, my mother and Grand Mother loved to go there and I'd go look at the Turtles stuff. All the years we went there I never saw Joes, they mostly had generic off brand toys. But they started getting some small Ninja Turtle vehicles, no figures though. Anyhow they had a lone Dreadnok Torch on the shelf. That was the one and only time I saw Joes there, I got that torch too. He was the first and only Dreadnok I had as a kid. I'm sure I am just remembering it wrong, but I remember something being off about the cardback. I think it had a grey filecard and had the 87 Joes and Cobras on it. Another late find was the Mobile Commander Center in 89 or 90 at Hill's. It was odd too, they never had it prior to that. And it was in the discount section, there was large stack of them. Maybe ten or so. I don't remember the price, but it was low enough that my Mother got it for me and it wasn't even my birthday or Christmas. |
