1) What are the common reasons for cracked elbows? 2)Why some Joes sellers do not consider cracked elbows as "damage"? Thank you.

1. age, plastic wear and tear over 30+ years. breakdown of plastics will happen under UV light too. Normal reasons for any stress fracture of a toy.
2. some people just want to watch the world burn? I guess preference. I have read but not seen some people claim it can happen in package Last edited by bluemax; 09-19-2017 at 02:42 AM.. |

The only elbow we cracked as kids was Repeater. Putting his gun into his hand, and having it mounted would put stress on the below. I have seen other figures with cracked elbows since then. I have assumed they are issues with temperature changes over time.

1) I was always under the impression, like described above, that it was due to the plastic expanding/contracting over time due to environmental factors, and due to the usage of metal rivets (which have a lot less "give" than the neighboring plastic parts).
2) Since cracked elbows seem to be unavoidable for the most part, and a sign of workmanship rather than wear and tear, a lot of folks consider them to be an inevitable limitation of the format rather than "damage" in the traditional sense. Sort of how O-rings have a near 100% disintegration rate if you wait long enough. Like O-ring breakage, there have also been reports of cracked elbows on carded figures, and it's hard to definitively call that sort of thing "damage" if there's no wear and tear at all.

certain figures have a thinner connection point at the elbow based on the mold and articulation. This thinner plastic is much more prone to cracking. Have you ever seen a cracked elbow on Blowtorch? How about Alpine?

Seems to affect 1988-1990 figures (US/Canada) the most. I suspect there was something up with manufacturing, like the rivets or the plastic or both.
That's why is can happen MOC, because flawed construction and the aging plastic eventually gives way. |

I have always chalked it up to the chemical composition of the plastic. It also has to do with how the elbow joint is formed by riviting the parts together. Riviting by its nature causes stress on the item being rivited. I think it is a much more mild form of "gold plastic syndrome"
Treating the issue as a straight up graded collectors issue the elbow should be taken into account due to imperfections being imperfections regardless of how they came to be. I don't put too much stock in whether elbows are cracked or not since the damage doesn't actually cause any problems with function. However, if given the choice between a cracked or uncracked joint I go for uncracked or try swap the arm out on the cheap. So with me, uncracked elbows are more desirable, but Im not going to lat out significantly more. One last thought towards the issue, We as collectors can't quite agree on what constitutes a "complete" for the loose figures. With or without filecard? Whole card or cut out? Can the o-ring be replaced? Can parts? What about rubber bands or the playdoh that came with some figures? I think the only baseline we agree on is that the figure can only be considered complete if they have all their originally colored gear and are unbroken. Although the more casual seem to be ok with the off color replacement gear, painted, or repro so even there there is a divide. I watched Night force figures with painted replacement gear go for the full going rate, over 100 each, last week and it was clearly stated in the desciption the gear was painted. So I guess the answer to the second question is because collectors are stupid enough to let them? IDK. Last edited by redraptor; 09-19-2017 at 05:08 PM.. |

It's a mystery. I have carded Repeater with a cracked elbow. So I can confirm it happens MOC. I am sure there are a lot of variables at play IE stress, plastic mixture pressure from the metal rivit expanding and contracting etc. It seems some figures are more prone to this than others Repeater being one of them along with Hardball, Char broil, Capt Grid Iron just off the top of my head.

1988-90 are definitely the worst offenders in the cracked elbow department, in particular, Hit & Run, the Tiger Force, and the Python Patrol. I don't know why but any of these figures are almost impossible to find without at least one cracked elbow...
