If Hasbro decided to re-release the original v1.5 GIJoe figures from 1983, do you think they would sell now?
Not repaints or modified versions but just direct rerelease - like Gentle Giant but the original size. |

Not in retail level numbers. If it was a specialty items for a convention/collector line maybe, but honestly with eBay making the actual '83 figures available I can't see much of a point and thus even among the collector markets I'm not sure how well straight up rerelease would do. I collect almost anything Joe including the Gentle Giant figures you mentioned and honestly straight up rereleases of vintage figures that are 100% identical in look and scale would be a pass for me cause I already have the originals.
Now this is a different topic but if we were talking about new O-ring figures of characters we never got that could be cool (although this still probably wouldn't be something big enough for Hasbro to take to retail). Like give us a o-ring Pythona or Hector Ramirez or Hard/Soft/Blind Master and I'd be all over that. Likewise characters that came out after o-ring was over like the new characters that were created during the new sculpt or modern eras would be great to have o-ring versions of. I really like what Super7 has been talking about doing with the Masters of the Universe line where they are continuing the modern era MOTU Classics line while at the same time are talking about giving us vintage style figures never before released like He-Ro and Eldor, and also doing some different reimagined stuff like their Reaction/Kenner style line. I wish we could get something similar with Joe where we could keep modern era going yet also add new characters to our O-ring collection. Unfortunately this would take significantly more tooling and design than FunPub is likely to do.

It would be great for the ARAH 40th in 2022,a box set of the original Joes and Cobras. They could even include extra arms and waists for collectors to have them as either straight arm or swivel arm.
Like the others have said, I doubt it would do that well at retail. But then look how well the 25th did at first. It's possible it could do well, if properly supported with some advertisements. I certainly would buy atleast two sets. If Hasbro really wanted to hit a major home run and make up alot of the cost of having to retool these old O-ring figures. They could make a Cobra Trooper/Officer army builder box set that has all the variants from the ARAH run. Trooper, Officer, Viper Glider Pilot, Stinger Driver, Python Officer/Trooper, maybe even Sunbow cartoon and Marvel comic Officer/Trooper variants as well. |

It would need some sort of gimmick to get it to go and the actual originals are all readily available for whoever wants them. I have to admit I do not find the original figs all that interesting nor does my 8 year old son. But a return to o-rings? Absolutely.
Modern figures in general are either too big (6") or too articulated. The classic o-ring style has a cleaness to it the modern figs have a hard time achieving with all the gear they come with and articulation they need. Scale back the military theme and push into a more adventure theme, get a show onto TV and release the product. New Joes vs Dinos, aliens, robots, etc. OG 13 box set released with series two. |

Depends on the packaging and they would need to do something to distinguish them from the originals like using a different plastic or paint process. Also they would have to be straight arm to get me to pick them up.

The problem with that is alot of people to this day have done that by incorporating other toylines with the Joes. They would have to use a different material to make them more sturdier, especially the hands, because the thumbs have a tendency to break when inserting weapons and accessories too many times.

I was thinking more if these figures where released again, just exactly as they once were - original packaging identical to the originals etc - would kids buy them?
Or.... I just had an idea What if Hasbro released the figures but with extra alternative parts (like alternative arms, heads and a also a screw driver/tool to promote customisation) - would these sell? Last edited by hedrock; 08-22-2017 at 07:58 AM.. |
