I have a slightly yellowed sky striker with perfect decals. Do I have to remove them to put it in the peroxide? I do realize getting wet and being in the heat may cause them to peel and fall off but it seems like a shame to take them off.
Also which replacement decals did you buy? I've heard that cobra stickers are good but the skystriker stickers arent quite a match to the originals. There is a black stripe instead of a white one after the word GI Joe and the names under the cockpit are different |

You could apply it and avoid putting it on the stickers. It'd be a real pain though due to the size of the SS. I haven't bought the decals yet but have always been happy with Toyhax/Cobra Stickers. I will order from them and give an update. |

Looks good. If you're not a fan of Cobrastickers, try Rattlerrepros.

I've been watching Crusaders on eBay have been thinking about getting one that needs some work to restore it. The SS was such a success that I feel more comfortable now saving a few bucks if I can and getting one that will need some extra work but will look good in the end.
I have a yellowed crusader I've been thinking about selling or trading. if interested let me know

I did this exact job on a very yellowed Takara Sunstreaker for a friend. I used hair salon Peroxide to whiten the figures again. Sadly, even if you keep the Skystriker and your other figures out of the sun, the yellowing will still return. It’s a chemical process that only temporarily fixes it. You did an awesome job, and I enjoy restoring Joe Vehicles as well. But, I would stay away from the Whitening techniques, all they do is make the plastic more brittle, and only temporarily whiten the figures or vehicles.

so the direct application of bleach method will still yellow again, but the indirect gas in a sealed bin will not? Or are all techniques subject to yellowing? I have a Valkyrie that has yellowed on the top that I'd love to fix.

It looks great. I'm sorry that I missed your earlier thread or I would have offered my 2 cents.
I don't use hardening pastes because they often contain abrasives which can damage the high sheen on some vehicles-like the SS. For softer surfaces you can make a paste out of baking soda, HP, and a few drops of tea tree oil that works wonders but again, beware the abrasiveness of the baking soda. I've never use more that 3% HP from discount stores-99 per 32 oz container. And you can see from my link below that 3% is more than adequate for whitening light gray to white toys. I have not yet experienced any damage to my toys from the peroxide, but am not sure if it's solely because of the 3% solution. I have read many restoration thread where folks try a cheaper solution to whitening. My recommendation is spend the money and wait until you have enough items to white to warrant a small kiddie pool, on sale off season from where ever. I got one for 6 bucks in the fall. Then bought 7 cases of HP from a discount store. I used the solution to also whiten my 83 Joe HQ, and my TBPF deck-see link below. An older Terror Drome restoration thread to see my post of the deck in the pool.http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...storation.html Lastly check out my SS restoration at the link below if you'd like to see Cobra Stickers decals in action. So far the only set of theirs that I found to be off was the Joe HQ but I suspect it has to do with copy right issues from the Marvel Comics images used on the comm screen cover. Aside from that I have been very happy with their product. Old modelers rule-wash with warm soap and water before you apply decals. Never leave any cleaning agents like ammonia, goo be gone, baby oil, or HP on the plastic long term. Fell free to hit me up in PM if I can help you an any way with your project and keep up the great work. It looks good so far. Slainte!

Interesting about Cobra Stickers not using the stock Marvel image on the HQ computer. Guess I never noticed that it wasn't included.
I did the whole H2O2 wash on a USS Flagg which came out great. I've heard several times that "it makes the plastic more brittle," but for the past 3 years since I've had my Flagg, I can't find one story that actually validates it. I also have a Terror Drome that I recently gave an Oxi-Clean bath. It works really well for cleaning away the grime. Be careful on darker plastics, it can cause bleach-like splotches. For sticker residue, I have a different process. I remove the original stickers and then soak the part in hot water with some sort of bath oil. Then after I lightly dry the piece, I use a spray lubricant and a white, painter's rag to clean off any left over sticker residue. The bath oil and spray lubricant (similar to WD-40) really works well for separating the adhesive from the plastic. Plus they are not abrasive/corrosive to the plastic, and don't stink like Goo-Gone, etc. Jason |

I am so happy to find this thread and the other about the Crusader restoration.
I have 3 1983 Skystrikers that I bought several years ago to restore before I knew the 30th Skystriker was being released. I am nearly finished completing them. I just received the reproduction decals. I just need 1 canopy. (1 Skystriker has 1 parachute, the other 2 don't have any parachutes.) They were mostly clean with a bit of yellowing especially on the tail fins. I removed the old decals which had a lot of dirt on the edges. I wanted to do more research on the hydrogen peroxide cleaning to see if it is worth trying without damaging the Skystrikers. As mentioned above, some people have said the yellowing will return and be worse. Or they have said it will cause brittleness. I watched one video on YouTube where it negatively affected different colors like red. Also thank you for this reminder. Old modelers rule-wash with warm soap and water before you apply decals. Never leave any cleaning agents like ammonia, goo be gone, baby oil, or HP on the plastic long term. |
