My memory isn’t clear about the year, but it was Christmas of either 1970 or 1971 (probably 1971). It began with just one 11 1/2 inch figure and a couple playsets to play with, and was never intended to become a collection, but quickly grew beyond that in the five years to follow. My mother didn’t want me playing with it at first, thinking that I was too young and that it would be a choking hazard, but my father thought I’d be fine.
The earliest figure I can remember owning by the release date was Action Soldier, but I can’t remember who bought that one for me, and it was after I had been playing with G.I. Joe for a couple years. The very first G.I. Joe I had ever received was the Talking Commander. I thought it came from Santa/North Pole, but eventually learned it was from Sears ($4.99). I got it and the Eight Ropes of Danger set that Christmas. It’s hard to think of a favorite figure from that year’s group, because many of those figures were offered for more than one year. I mixed and matched all of their uniforms and accessories, so it seemed like everything from those early years just blended together into one large collection. I do remember that I later wanted the Talking Astronaut from the same year that my Talking Commander came from, but never did receive that one. I darn near had all of them from the seventies, but not that Astronaut.

My first was straight arm Grunt. My dad bought him for me at Woolworths. I loved him, so we went back later that week and got Flashband the RAM cycle. I had no idea what G.I. Joe even was at the time, (this was before I’d seen a single commercial, comic, or cartoon), but my dad picked it out for me because he’d had a bunch of the 12” guys when he was a kid. I got issue 2 of the ARAH comic shortly thereafter and the rest is history....
Writing this reminds me of some of the rare stuff I saw back then... the Penny’s Cobra three pack with the bazookas, blues saber ROTJ Luke....
