I just got my 100% complete G.I.Joe Killer W.H.A.L.E. today that I paid $20.00+$13.00 s/h for and now I have a question. What's the best way to clean a vintage vehicle like this? It is really dirty outside(dusty) and has dirt inside the sled spot and the troop hatch area. There was a layer of dirt in the bottom of the bag it was wrapped in so I'm sure there's some more dirt inside the body as well. It will be completely torn appart and stripped of it's stickers(which aren't in that bad of shape given the age of the toy) and prepped for paint. I was wondering what the best way to clean this would be? Like soaking in solution of something or just plain hot water and mild soap or something else?

I use dishwashing soap and a toothbrush for my prep. So far that has worked, but I would be interested in hearing more options.

Every time I get a battered old vehicle I completely dismantle it (as far as is possible, of course; some parts shouldn't be taken apart because it will break them). Then I clean them using (of all things) Cilit BAM. It has no nasty effects on the plastic at all. I then rinse the parts under a slightly warm shower, and dry them VERY carefully with a hairdryer on a very low heat setting.
For sticker removal I actually use lighter fluid; it gets rid of all the goo, doesn't damage anything, and evaporates in seconds leaving no trace. Then I put repro stickers on (often easier when it's still in pieces)and reassemble it. I've used these methods on my Kilelr WHALE, Avalanche, General, Thunder Machine, BUGG, Maggot, Defiant, and a LOT of Transformers & Zoids; for proof of how well all this works, look in my thread about restoring my Defiant. |

I'm going to have to try your method of sticker removeal with lighter fluid, right now I use a mixture of GooGone & Johnson's Baby Oil. It gets kind of messy though but does the job.

Draven's methods work well, I've seen his images of his restored ARAH vehicles, they look brand new!

I personnaly use Foaming window cleaner and a few paint brushes. I remove all decals with goo be gone(allthough i like the lighter fluid idea), then wax using a car wax(Mcquires Cleaner). Then i really repro stickers. Mcquires PLASTIX for plastic headlights works great on canopies and the like also.

I use soap and water after taking them apart. but in cases where you have some bigs like the General and Rolling Thunder i put them in the bath tub and used a toothbrush and body wash and these vehicles had thier stickers intact before and after the bath. this worked for me.

I take a razor and slowly remove the stickers but have not taken an effort to thoroughly clean the vehicle. There was a thread on how to make figures white again, I'm sure it would help clean anything up. |
