Just imagine your FLAGG with the DEFIANT parked on it!!!! To me that would just be like in last issue of G.I.Joe Special Misssion #28! To quote Payload as he is landing the Defiant of the FLAGG, "It is more like flying the Indy 500 in a Greyhound bus!"

To me the Defiant (as with the Flagg) is my Holy grails of G.I. Joe collectibles. Both are great play sets with many different possibilities. I would pay top dollar for either one (come on winning Power Ball numbers

A cool toy, but not worth the 400 IMO. The Flagg, battle platform and and Terrordrome double as display stands, the Defiant not so much. I wanted one as a kid, but even then I had a hard time thinking of how Id play with it with the rest of my Joe toys. I was a "realist" and any joes going into a space ship needed to look like astronauts, which meant no Gung Hos in open vests and camo. Almost as bad as topless Quick kick hanging on the Snowcat. My Joe Cannon was based on the Comic, I always hated the corny cartoon and its death-free laser spamming ridiculousness. I can imagine Hama shaking his head when he got word he was going to have to shoehorn in a space shuttle to his story line. There were always a couple of issues a year where he'd placate Hasbro with a couple issues featuring all the new big vehicles and characters he didn't have time for, and after that we'd never see them again.
Also the Defiant (like Battle Force 2000) always struck me as the beginning of the end of the line, sending Joes into space was kind of an unnecessary diversion, and not really in keeping with the original spirit of the line. A cool toy, sure, but unless you've got 400 bucks with nowhere else to go, I'd skip it. Besides, after you get that you'll have to start buying loads of Starvipers so it has something to shoot at.

i probably would spend that much on it, but fortunately i still have my original un-played with one. i got mine for $119 back then. obviously, for $400 you would want it as complete as possible. it does weigh a lot and can consume some space. i display it parked and closed with the shuttles parked separately.

I've always wanted the Defiant, but didn't get it as a kid. $400 is a very good price if it is in very good condition. I've seen Ebay bids for $600+ for complete Defiants. $400 bids were usually missing a good amount of parts or had yellowed plastic from sun damage. I was fortunate enough to get the 2nd version Defiant without the crawler or the larger shuttle. Thank goodness for cousins who don't want their GI Joes anymore.
All in all, if I had the dough to drop on the Defiant, $400 would be easily surrendered for one.

It has lots of play value, but its only worth 400$ if you REALLY want it.
It always reminded me of the Avenger's quinjet, and the Venture Star that was supposed to replace the Space Shuttle as a single stage to orbit launch vehicle. Man I was excited by the Venture Star, it seemed like a great idea, that would have worked!

The Defiant: Space Vehicle Launch Complex is definitely worth the money now and in 1987. I'm always rearranging how I display the gantry, booster and shuttle. Also, there are a ton of foot pegs and seats and spots to display figures.
I was done with GI Joe in 1987 and I really wish I would have had this as a kid. However, I've made up for it over the past decade with the purchase of two of these sets. |

The Defiant is easily worth the price. But I really don't think you have to pay $400 for one. I haven't been pricing them out myself recently because I have had one for years. But I got one for $110 that was missing many parts. I spent probably another $100 or so completing it and some more on paint and new stickers. So I probably have $250 in to mine. But if you spent $400 on it, I don't think you would regret it. I think it is easily more fun than the Flagg and just displays really nicely.
