I was looking at the deck plan. They look more like the Midway class, which isn't a bad thing, as the Midway class did carry the F-14. The Essex class ships could not support that aircraft. The modified Essex carriers had three aircraft elevators, but only two were deck-edge elevators. The forward elevator was an enlarged centerline elevator held over from the WWII configuration. It is located between the catapults. There should be no deck edge elevator forward of the island. The starboard side elevator should be aft of the island. Finally, the port side elevator is at the forward end of the angled flight deck. I used to work at the USS Lexington museum in Corpus Christi, Texas. If you have any questions for reference, I'd be happy to help. Good luck and keep us posted.

for those that don't understand why everett colby used that God awful seam foam green on the interior spaces, this is the same cold used on the interior bridge spaces of most modern Navy ships. I'm not sure why….and most of us who own those spaces try to convert it to blue if we can get away with it. Nice job Colby, keeping the accuracy of a true Navy Carrier.

Good stuff Mr Colby. And awesome paint job BTW. Comming across your pics on here was one of the main things that inspired me to head down to the basement and survey my "rusty" mothballed Flagg.
Thank you for the info as well. I spent many years working on the USS Massachusetts in Fall River, MA which made me even more admire your custom job. I've painted many a bulkhead sea foam green. Lol As far as that deck layout: I was having problems posting multiple pics That was just some drawing that I found as part of a discussion regarding the Royal Austrailian Navy's interest in buying an unmodified Essex class ship in the 1960s Interestingly I was actually thinking about a Midway type deck arrangement initially Here's what I got so far for my "improved" Essex class flight deck. Note: this arrangement only requires the use of 2 additional Flagg deck sections and one extra elevator deck. I kept the design strictly to what I could "cut and paste" using existing Flagg components. This is still a rough draft I'm still messing around with the Cat locations there is really not enough room for two side by side cats up forward. I will still have plenty of deck material to build out the port side a bit more and extend outward the # 3 elevator. Will post updates Last edited by SCB 125; 12-31-2014 at 12:42 AM.. BZ on relocating the crane as well! If you like my paint job, I'd be happy to list the paints I used. Just let me know. Last edited by Everett Colby; 12-31-2014 at 03:39 PM.. |

Question about Keel Haul's file card. I noticed that the mail-in version from Hasbro Direct of his file card has a date of 1988 on the upper right corner.
What does the original 1985 file card of the version that came with the USS Flagg look like? Did he come with one? Because I have yet to see a file card with a 1985 date on it. Or are all the cut-out file cards I see on eBay just the 1988 Hasbro Direct version?

That's awesome Davestro! Was the large 99 sticker hard to apply? It seems it might be difficult to avoid air bubbles.

The 99 was pretty easy to stick on. What I will never do again is buy UNCUT stickers. It was a royal pain getting all the deck strips lined up correctly. Next time will go with Cobrastickers as I always do.
