Wow!! You guys are taking me back!! I love all the photos I'm seeing.
I've begun on my long path to restoration of my Flagg by buying some of the missing pieces and replacing a lot of the pieces that oxidized and yellowed after all the days my Flagg sat under the sun and left overnight outside when I was a child. Pretty much my entire superstructure and truss/hull set turned yellow. It was such a horrifying experience when I opened my storage boxes after a good 24-25+ years and witnessed most of these parts were susceptible to oxidation. But the good thing is that I'm having a lot of fun trying to hunt down parts and pieces that I need to put her back together. This is becoming a labor of love project and I really plan on having her look close to mint condition once I'm done. I'll never forget how blown away I was in seeing the 1985 G.I. Joe product catalog and seeing the Flagg at the very bottom of the paper. A part of me thought Hasbro was lying with such a product, but at the same time, I knew it was real because it was a featured item on the catalog. I recently looked at a 1985 product catalog and conjured up the same childhood feelings. This is great. Now, I know I still have the microphone somewhere in storage. If only I could find it. lol

I'm steadily acquiring the superstructure components. I don't mind the yellowed parts, as I plan on a bit of customizing. As we know, the Flagg was modeled after the USS Intrepid. Intrepid is one of several Essex class carriers that were refit in the 1950's. I worked for the USS Lexington museum in Corpus Christi, Texas, when I was stationed there in the Coast Guard. I'd say that I'm pretty familiar with that class of ship. I plan on cleaning the parts and painting them with the colors authentic to the class. I'll post some photos of my progress, if there's interest from the board here.
I have not been able to locate one particular component so far. So, if you folks happen to know of an available Combat Computer (part M-4080), I'd be interested. I don't have anything for trade. Thanks! |

Here's the extent of the yellowing to my childhood Flagg. On the left is the mint piece I am replacing it with. Notice the microphone connection tab is unbroken and in tact.

I will need sell all my yellowed parts on eBay to recoup the costs I paid for the parts I am replacing them with.

Alright there, Flagg skippers..... I've always wondered what the infamous "purge valve" was for. Any guesses? There wouldn't have been any valves like that on the real deal. Hasbro must have either thought it was something major or just arbitrarily placed it there.
