Nostalgia is kicking in something fierce today...
What was your first GI Joe figure, vehicle, playset? What was your last? What was a figure or vehicle/playset that holds a lot of memories? For me: First Joe was straight arm Grunt. After playing with nothing but 5 POA Star Wars I remember getting my hands on a neighbor kid's Grunt and it was wobbly... I remember not liking him initially because he wasn't as stiff as the Star Wars. Of course that figure grew on me and I either got my own or traded for his. I remember getting Zap and Scarlett, Snake Eyes and Breaker shortly after. A sad memory was when I brought Stalker into school for show and tell in early 1983. Another kid asked why I liked him so much. I do not remember what I said but I asked why he didn't like him... and this will haunt me for all time... he said "I hate him because he's black." For a little kid racism was just unheard of and I remember feeling awful that the other kid felt that way. The one thing I really like about GI Joe was its diversity. First vehicle was the RAM motorcycle. My mother was a divorced, full time working mom. My dad was an abusive, deadbeat that skipped out on child support, so money was indeed tight. I asked my mother if I could have my $3 allowance to buy it. She said she didn't have it and I started crying. (Remember I was 7 years old and didn't have a clue about life.) She reached into her apron and gave me $5 dollars, the only $5 dollars she had I'm sure. As an adult I feel a little ashamed, but we were kids, we knew nothing of the world. I once brought that up to my dear mother and she said she doesn't even remember it! Haha, so she said she never felt upset or angry about it... ha! That Christmas I got the Mobat and MMS from my mom's fiancé's parents at the time. (He ended up being my step dad in 1983) I remember going out of my mind with happiness. The catalogs that came with vehicles hold the most nostalgia for me. I would spend hours lusting over all the vehicles I once had and lost, and all those I would never have. I spent many a Saturday afternoon staring at the boxed Defiant on the top shelf at Target. Out of reach both physically and financially. I have one now... thankfully a gift from my late wife... it will be a treasured addition to my ever expanding Joe collection. Last figures were from 1990... I was in High School and was kinda being "forced" to give up toys and move on to things like music and girls. So guys like Rock Viper and Sub-Zero were some of my last. I was still into the comics though and was able to keep up on the Joes, as it were. Last vehicle was the Locust helicopter. I remember looking at the catalog of other vehicles and seeing that a Locust came with the General, I thought that was pretty cool. After 1990 I stopped buying Joes. I moved on to music, CDs had been out for a while, but they became a little more prevalent and all my money went into buying them. Tried to get into girls ;) but that didn't happen for a long time, haha. As an adult I appreciate the detail the vehicles have... I look at the underside of the Thunderclap tow vehicle and marvel at the detail they put into something that you wouldn't see normally. They didn't have to sculpt controls on the driver's seat inside the Mauler... but they did. You can see the passion they put into their work and that's the reason GI Joe is still popular and loved by all of us "little kids." Long winded post, I know... but I hope you can share a tid bit of your childhood here...

first figure... well, I'm British, so it'd have to be either Steeler (Z-Force), Quarrel or Stalker (SASF) as I got them all for Christmas, with their vehicles: Z Force Battle tank, Rapid-Fire Bike and Panther.
If we're going for figure-sold-in-the-US-colours, it was AF Infantryman/Grunt. If we're going for sold-as-the-US-characters, Flint, Footloose and a Cobra trooper, bought second hand off a kid at school in 1987 when the first two were new to the UK. Footloose was missing his M16 and LAW. I also got the Checkpoint Alpha from the same kid. Last vehicle I got, as a kid, was the HAVOC. I had birthday money to spend and a choice of two vehicles I wanted, the HAVOC or the WHALE. I went with the HAVOC and these days, I wish I'd got the WHALE as a HAVOC'd be easier to buy off eBay without spending a small fortune. Last figure I got as a kid... Probably Sub-Zero. |

Growing up we had several 80-90s figures my mom had picked up from garage sales and my brother had pieced back together the best he could. A Targat head on Gen Hawk body, broken thumbs, and only incomplete vehicles were the norm for me and we got them that way.
The classics for me were Shockwave with camo legs and a tiger force vamp which I thought was a drednok vehicle for Gnaw.... I also had a night rave that was missing everything, so I flew the thing upside down. I didnt get my first NEW GI Joe figures until GVC came out. My first new set was Iron Grenadier Vs Recondo. still 2 of my favorite figures to this day. As time went on and VVV came out I picked up the Snake Eyes ninjacycle and probably played with that thing to death. The last set I ever got before quitting was the DTC Humvee and Saw Viper. After that I stopped collecting joes and focused on Legos and Halo, wasnt until 2014ish when I started collecting again and my bank account has never been the same since.

Nice topic! Nostalgia is pretty much the only reason I do this and I agree fully that the Joe toy designers obviously loved what they did and put some seriously fantastic little touches into everything. Matter of fact, that's at the top of my list of reasons why I still dig this shit. I remember as a kid lining Joe figures up on the floor with their respective accessories arranged around each figure. I'd just kneel there over them, taking in all the intricate details. I loved how each figure not only had awesome equipment, but how there were all these cool things molded onto the figures, and onto the accessories themselves. Little pouches, canteens, pistols, knives, walkie-talkies, ammo...man, it was just so cool! The vehicles were no different. To this day, I still love the early stickers showing you where the aid kit and toolbox went. Anyway...
What was your first GI Joe figure, vehicle, playset? It was the MMS and I retain a soft spot for Hawk to this day because of it. I didn't have anything to tow the MMS, so I had Hawk ride it around like a motorcycle. Like you, there wasn't a lot of money growing up, so I made do and cherished what I got. Later on I borrowed a Polar Bear from a friend to tow it around...broke my heart when that sonofabitch demanded its return! What was your last? Last was from the '88 group, I believe...pretty sure it was Shockwave. I remember being out of toys by then, but seeing that toy and needing to buy it almost for old time's sake. What was a figure or vehicle/playset that holds a lot of memories? So many...so I'll confine it to a couple. I remember my little brother got a Tripwire after a doctor's visit and being so jealous...and then pissed off at him when he lost all the mines. Just before I stopped buying toys, I got a huge (relative to what I was used to) chunk of money for my birthday. I went to Lionel Playworld and bought the Phantom X-19. Large, impressive toys were always unattainable to me, so when I saw that giant box with that ridiculous artwork of some wild-ass stealth jet, and I realized I could actually buy it, I sprint-walked all the way to the registers. First Gi joe memory was The Cobra MAGGOT. My babysitter had purchased my brother and I Gi Joe toys for christmas of 87? Before the Turtles, I at least know that. But that Maggot survived allot of years and was my all time "chariot" for whomever was popular in the basement at the time.
My last must have been Star Brigade and or the Street Fighter figures, both were sold at my local drugstore and I could convince Mom to buy me one when we did the groceries. By that time I was consumed with Star Wars books and micro machines. The fluorescent colors were trivial and uninteresting at the age of 11. I also acquired fake John Lennon glasses at that Peoples drug but they were purple. Holding the most memories would go to the BUGG another vehicle but just so awesome with all of its little spaces and and computer areas I could really jam on that thing as a kid. Best part was the BUGG we found at a church bazaar. I have sinced recovered both the Bugg and the Maggot in my collection.

I think my first Joes was straight arm Breaker and swivel arm Rock n'Roll, I still have my old Rock n'Roll too! I don't remember which one I got first, but I remember having those two and the RAM, the JUMP and nothing else. Same with the RAM and JUMP. Don't remember which one I got first, but it was the 82 JUMP (no Grand Slam). That Christmas I got another JUMP, the 83 with Grand Slam.
Poor Breaker, his left arm broke off in 85. I got so lucky, we went to a yard sale and there was a 83 swivel arm Breaker. I was so happy to have Breaker back whole again and with swivel arms! My first playset was the 83 Headquarters. My Grand Father got that for me for Christmas in 83. I was so proud of that, my Dad helped me put it together and put the stickers on it. When we got home that night, Christmas eve, I asked my parents if I could put the HQ box beside the Christmas tree so Santa would see I already have it and if he was bringing me one he could give it to another kid. A little backstory on my Grand Father and the HQ. On my Dad's side of the family they had so many kids and grand kids (8 kids and more grand kids than I can count, in 83 I think it was 8. now it's like 23 and 6 great grand kids). At Thanksgiving they would put everyones name into a bowel and we'd draw names to see who we would get a present for at Christmas. My Grand Father got my name. He was a conductor on the railroad so he wasn't home much or had much free time. He knew I liked GIJoe and asked his daughters when they went to do the Christmas shopping to get me the biggest GIJoe thing they had. That he didn't care what it cost. God bless him, he was one of the best. Figure that has alot of memories is a toss up between Ripcord and Tiger Force Duke. My uncle was in the National Guard back then and they had just gotten the new camo bdu's, so to me Ripcord looked just like he did. Ripcord was my go to Joe for years. Then there was Tiger Force Duke, I was probably more excited and happy to get that Duke than any other Joe I got back then. I had always wanted Duke but could't find him in any stores. My neighbor had him and would never let me play with Duke. I got TF Duke and I had to dig out all my old 82-85 Joes for a reunion. I also got a mail in Skyhawk that year just for Duke to fly around in. Those two stayed in use until I quit playing with Joes in 92. My last Joe stuff was the Patriot and 92 Duke. I didn't have much of the 92 stuff, they just never showed up in stores around here. I eventually quit getting Joes not so much because I was growing out of it, but because I couldn't find anything new to get. After that my money went to getting Sega Genesis games. |

One day my younger brother came back from school and he could not stop talking about this awesome toy some other kid had. He managed to pester my parents enough that the next day they took us to a peruvian version of a flea market (that's where i'm from) and bought him that toy, which turned out to be the 86 viper (gotta admit he had good taste). I picked Barbecue for myself, lamentably there was not a whole lot to choose from. The next day our cousin was coming over to visit so we whined to our parents that with only two figures all three of us would not be able to play, this somehow worked so we went back and I got 86 Hawk and my brother picked up Leatherneck. I believe my last figure ever was Headhunter Stormtrooper in 93, which is honestly one of the best figures in the vintage Joe line so i went out in a high note.

I believe my first figure might have been a Rock 'n Roll v1. That was my favorite for a long time. Still is, come to think of it.
My most recent Joe is a Star-Viper v1. Picked him up over the weekend. My favorite vehicle was the Thunder Machine. |
