How would y'all feel if they released a resolute flagg that was significantly smaller than the original? That would reduce the cost and allow more people to have room for it. Say for instance 3 to 4 feet long and 100 150 dollars. Perhaps it would come with a smaller aircraft designed for it (a repainted firebat) What do y'all think?

If you read my posts, you'll find I'm rather skeptical of getting a FLAGG myself (and wouldn't be buying one even if it came out). The difference is that I have a basic understanding of how business works, and the relationship between retailer, manufacturer, and consumer.
A FLAGG is not remotely possible right now. Neither is a new Skystriker. But if the movie brings in thousands of new kids that are suddenly into this whole "G.I. Joe" thing, then the Skystriker becomes more possible. The Flagg too, even if it's still extremely unlikely, at least in anything resembling the original in scope. You don't have to use the FLAGG for the example in this post. It could be any larger vehicle or playset that fans have talked about wanting, including the Skystriker. Until the G.I. Joe brand GROWS to the point that it's justified, Hasbro (and more importantly the retailers) simply cannot and will not take the risk on these kinds of items (without a major multi-media tie-in as in the case of the Pit). For all the 25A's "success" it was still not successful enough to justify a new Skystriker. The only way that's going to happen is with new blood buying the line, and a larger fanbase of both pre-existing adult collectors and kids just starting to explore the world of G.I. Joe. Some people seem to think that's impossible because they personally don't like the movie and movie products. They seem to be unable to grasp even the possibility that the entire world won't share their opinion. I'm sure if we had an internet in 1982, we'd be reading a whole bunch of posts from people saying "This 3.75" crap will never sell. They should just be giving us more 12" G.I. Joe and Adventure Team stuff! We've been supporting them this long and now we're not good enough for them?? F- U HASBLOW! I'm not buying any of this stupid "Real American Hero" crap." Guess how that turned out?

But the foot longs and ARAH were COMPLETELY different. Different scale, different design, different direction. With ROC there are too many similarities with ARAH and 25th. THAT is the problem. Granted, Sigma6 was a misstep, but I think it was not the step that was wrong, but rather the timing. Trying to sell ONE product to make two markets happy will result with no one being happy.

As for the Aircraft, the old Storm Eagle, or Liquidator could possibly work... or at least a vehicle that size. What this new Resolute Flagg could do is change this up a bit... if it's not as long they could make it taller and use the hull as a playset and give us more detail in the tower. The twin flight deck design from Resolute would solve some of the issues of lack of length... but you're the Pilot, Jon. What do you think?

It's still a massive change for the Joe Property, despite not changing up the "recipe" of their figures completely. The point still stands. Some fans feel like they're being abandoned/ignored. Heck, your point makes the kvetching even more nonsensical, since Hasbro is still certainly trying to throw the "old school" collectors some bones with certain exclusives, vehicle drivers, etc... Hasbro was still selling ONE product (3.75" Joes) to two markets (new fans and 12" fans) in 1982, and it turned out just fine. Now they're just selling one product (ROC-branded Joes) to two markets (new fans and old fans). Last edited by Jmacq1; 05-20-2009 at 11:19 AM.. |

Heck, give me a 1 to 2 foot long piece of flight deck (with or without "decks" below) and a detailed multi-story tower and I'd be happy.

I'd be alright with that, heck, if it's the best we can do, I would take it. I could still use the old Flagg, but a newer design and smaller size could be used in conjunction with it.

It just seems like that would be the most economical way to do a new Flagg. I'm trying to remember when the original came out. It was easily the biggest playset ever made for the Joes, but did it do well as a seller? I can't remember. I think the size of it probably hurt it's sales even in the 80's. I remember getting the shuttle complex one Christmas instead of the Flagg simply becuse the Flagg wouldn't fit in our home. A smaller Flagg would alleviate that problem. Also, not to ruin anyone's dreams, but the original Flagg was not to actual scale. Most Joe vehicles are not to scale. So would a smaller Flagg be that terrible? |
