I wouldn't recommend using pop rivets on your joes. "The Bead Smith EZ-Rivet" tool works good for setting semi tubular rivets, plus it has a piercing piece that makes removal of the rivets easy.

This is the rivet tool.
The setting tool is on the left and the piercing tool is on the right. With the piercing side push out the old semi-tubular rivet. The original rivet will be reusable. As you can see, the original rivet is bigger than the 1/16 replacement rivet. depending how snug the fit is you may have to use plyers to gently insert the original rivet. Then you can place the arm into the tool and genly set the rivet. It doesn't take much pressure to set it. I believe the size of the original rivets are 3/32" diameter with a 1/8" domed head and a 1/4" long shaft.

Thanks so much for the explanation. Got to see where I can find a tool like that here in Sweden.
Thanks again. Perfect photos! |

I found a listing on Amazon for the EZ-Rivet tool shown above:
https://www.amazon.com/BeadSmith-EZ-...gateway&sr=8-1 but they are rather expensive, unless you want a used (but "like new") one. There is another listing for something that looks identical, but is a bit more generic, and much cheaper. https://www.amazon.com/1-5mm-Hole-Pu...gateway&sr=8-2 Does this cheaper one look like it would be suitable? For $12.99 shipped (US), I'm tempted to give it a try.

So, I grabbed that cheaper tool off Amazon, and it showed up today.
The "nut" on the punch tool side (that provides the socket to punch a hole through) can be removed to allow room for the arm to fit and for the rivet to be pushed through the tool. However, the surface underneath is kind of rough, and can scratch the arm that's resting on it. I'm going to try filing it down and putting some E-tape or something over the hole to smooth it out and maybe also provide a bit of grip. I decided to use the arms from a yellowed, incomplete Space Shot as a trial run since he was the most expendable figure that was handy. The right arm (on the left of picture) turned out mostly fine, but I had to be careful to hold the arm level so the rivet could be pushed out cleanly, and to avoid any scraping from the punch or from the socket area. The rivet looks like it could be re-used. The left arm (on the right of the picture) received some scuffing, and the rivet was somewhat deformed, since I was not as careful about holding the arm level or steady while piercing. Part of the problem is that this arm has a lot of contour to it and doesn't lie flush against the surface of the tool. If the arm was flatter, it would have probably gone a little more smoothly. Again, some padding underneath the arm would help out. That said, there wasn't any real damage done that couldn't be polished out. But this was already a beater; I'll want to be more careful when I try a figure whose condition is important. I haven't tried to reset the "good" rivet yet since it looks like I'll need some pliers to get it back through the forearm, but I don't have any handy.

I have not purchased any extra rivets yet, but I've used the tool I purchased a few times (this one here which cost me $12.99), and it works, but it has some caveats.
For one, piercing and removing a rivet is a bit stressful, since the bit is essentially pressing the rivet against the arm itself until the rivet pushes through, and so the arm takes the pressure of the bit pushing down. If the arm is irregularly shaped and doesn't lie flush, the rivet may not push through cleanly, or you may get stress damage to the arm. The metal surface of the tool can also potentially scuff up the arm wherever it makes contact (see my Space Shot's arms above). Putting some tape or padding over the exposed metal may help prevent scuffing. Overall, I almost feel like drilling out the old rivet is probably safer than pressing it out, at least if you have some extra rivets to replace it with. Pressing/setting a rivet is probably easier, though the form factor of the tool isn't ideal. The circular piece that the head of the rivet sits against is wider than the head of the rivet, which is not a problem if the rivet is supposed to extend past the surface of the joint a little bit, or if the socket is wide enough. If the rivet is counter-sunk into the joint, as with Space Shot, then this is more of a problem since there isn't any easy way to apply the pressure directly to just the rivet without the plastic getting in the way. Also, with the circular surface piece attached, fat shoulders won't fit into the tool. I'm trying to improvise a piece which has a flatter profile and is more narrow/tapered so it can distribute the pressure more directly to the rivet without pressing against the surrounding plastic, but I haven't hit on anything totally successful yet. I will try to post some more pictures later if the description alone doesn't make things clear enough.

I've been looking into this for a while.
I think i'm going to move forward with purchasing one and attempting to repair some Straight Arm figures. I have a few arms that are in perfect condition however the shoulder attachment has broken off. With the thumbs intact id like to repair these as they are not easy to come by. Anyone have any advice on this? Also does anyone know of someone who may cast shoulder joints for SA figures? If not ill just use some broken thumb arms. |
