Hey, I just wanted to throw this out there. I got back into joes about 2.5 years ago and I picked up a bunch of joes and was very impressed with the VvV and that era joes. Sure, some are t-crotch but they have nice sculpts, and some of these pre-ME (25th and beyond) are as nice as ME figures. I think this line gets overlooked a lot, they aren't ARAH o-rings, and they are not ME, but you can certainly see the lineage. I almost think using that era's construction with some modern improvements, like ball joint necks, might have yielded even better results than what we have now, not that I am unhappy with 25th and beyond.
So, I am very partial to Beachhead, Shipwreck (Spy Troops), Alpine v2, and "Chief" Torpedo. I also have a loose SAW viper that is very nice, and recently acquired the Steel Brigade half of the TRU Plague troop. The one figure has rotating wrists and they all have nice head sculpts. I can live without double jointed knees, I don't think they help on most figures as hip movement is limited by the crotch piece, negating what the double jointed knees provide. The rotating wrist is a must have. Ankles, preferred but not a must have. Anyway, any thoughts? A favorite figure from that era? |

I like many of the o-ring repaints like the green Viper (love)/the 3 packs/ and TRU sets, but I also like new sculpt Zarana, Bombstrike, Recondo, Sand Viper, IGs, Black Dragon Ninja, widescope, and Beachhead. Also love love love Cross Hair.

I liked that era quite a bit at the time, and sported some pretty thick rose-colored goggles for as long as I could. Eventually, however, the funky proportions and schizophrenic nature of the sculpting forced me out of it. There was no unifying "look" to the lines. It was like they were letting at least three different teams, with their own respective ideas of what the toys should look like, design toys at the same time. In some ways, it kinda felt like you were mixing toy lines together, like playing with Star Wars and G.I. Joe guys together as a kid.
For every pretty great figure like Crosshairs, we'd get 2 or 3 Moonboots Flints. Another thing that bugged me was how they'd almost put together a really nice figure and then screw it up with humungous shoulders (Zarana, Bombstrike) or a tiny torso (Widescope, plenty of others) or something else like dicked-up hands (CLAWS Commander). Those lines are just too unfocused, aesthetically, for me. |

Well said. Though I am desperate for o-rings again.

I can think of at least 20 off the top of my head here(in no particular order, and I didn't include TRU exclusives)...
1) Cross Hairs. Great sculpt, used him to replace Recondo as my jungle expert, and he's a sniper. I liked his NF version the best. 2) Zarana. This is the best version of Zarana out there in my opinion. 3) Torch. Only flaw I have with him is he's shorter than other figures. Other than that he's the best looking version of Torch. 4) Spytroops Ripper. He may look more like generic trucker here, but aside from that he looks strong and I like the detail. 5) Chief Torpedo. All of the versions i've seen of this figure have looked generic so having one that looks unique is awesome. 6) Bombstrike. Awesome new character, and one of the best female characters. 7) Slash. Aside from being restricted by the skirt he looks absolutely bad-ass with that case of his, which reminds me of the weapon used by Antonio Banderas' character in the movie Desperado. 8) Jinx. Again, same reason as with Chief Torpedo. 9) Snow Wolf. One of the winter characters to show up and has one of the best sculpts along with it. 10) Swamp Rat. I always imagine these menacing villains screaming "Rehhhhhh" as they crawl through sewers and get ready to slice someone's throat as they sneak up on 'em. 11) Spytroops Barrel Roll. Aside from the small waist, it was great to see him get introduced as a sniper, and he came with a cool vehicle along with him. 12) Blackout. While the odd arms were a bit of a letdown, he looked bad-ass as a new sniper, to join together with the Night Vipers to give Low-Light a run for his money and the awesome storyline with his sibling rivalry with Barrel Roll made it even better. 13) Sand Viper. Besides Desert Scorpions, we didn't have any other desert COBRAs at the time, so it was great to see these guys. 14) Wide Scope. In spite of the small waist, it was great to have another S.W.A.T. member and he had a cool pet on his side. 15) COBRA Coils(Spytroops, black). Came with a cool rifle, looked mean and muscular, and I kinda imagined him to be like a Dreadnok without officially being one(if that makes any sense). 16) Razorclaw(wave 6 VvV). Kinda reminds me of the evil version of Wolverine, and had a nice backstory too in the comic he came with. 17) Recondo. Was a decent figure, though should have been a different character. 18) Alley Viper(Spytroops 2-pack and JvC). The JvC and Spytroops 2-pack versions were 3 of the best repaints of the Alley Viper figure. 19) Valor vs. Venom Viper. Great updates to the Vipers. 20) Burn Out. One of the coolest new characters that was a Dreadnok, and he was a master of disguise too.

I like Bombstrike, Widescope, Barrel Roll, and Blackout. But I absolutely love Cross Hair. I'd love an ME update of him. I like the sculpts a lot. I'm surprised for the most part, because I've always felt that ME was the epitome of sculpting.

This era really does get overlooked!
The Steel Brigade VS Plague set is excellent. One of the best packs to end that era. Spy Troops Barrel Roll was fun. VVV wave 4/Ninja Cycle/Ninja Battles/Dollar General/O-ring Storm Shadow is a lot of fun. Range of motion is excellent. Has one of the best functional GIJOE backpacks ever designed IMO. VVV wave 7 Gung-Ho was cool, one of the first with pinless joints. Vvv Cobra Commander with removable hood and battle mask is AWESOME, one of my favorite Cobra Commander figures of all time. I also like the t-crotch 2002 Storm Shadow, love the design. Also there is no other Storm Shadow figure that holds its weapons better than the Sigma 6 figures. Bombstrike is excellent. Gvc wave 3 Cobra Commander isn't bad. |

Ahhh yeah, Gung-Ho and Storm Shadow, almost forgot about those, and before the new Gung-Ho is coming out this August, I think the VvV version is the best one of the character.

Faves from that era: Zarana, Pit Viper (black v2), Blackout, Iron Grenadier (black version), and Overkill (gray & black version). There were some gems back then amidst the crap.
