The inconsistent proportions were the worst part of the line. Overall though i liked the line a lot. I didn't mind that the look of the line wasn't very unified. I liked that we got so many different looks, as a customizer i think it was very inspiring. Engineering wise it's alot of articulation elements started. The wrist and ankle articulation started here, and the double knee joint, and the modern swivel elbow. The current joe owes a lot to this line. The line also did a better job of introduing new characters they were given new sculpts and were fleshed out way beyonthe current lines kit bashed after thoughts.

I liked that era quite a bit at the time, and sported some pretty thick rose-colored goggles for as long as I could. Eventually, however, the funky proportions and schizophrenic nature of the sculpting forced me out of it. There was no unifying "look" to the lines. It was like they were letting at least three different teams, with their own respective ideas of what the toys should look like, design toys at the same time. In some ways, it kinda felt like you were mixing toy lines together, like playing with Star Wars and G.I. Joe guys together as a kid.
For every pretty great figure like Crosshairs, we'd get 2 or 3 Moonboots Flints. Another thing that bugged me was how they'd almost put together a really nice figure and then screw it up with humungous shoulders (Zarana, Bombstrike) or a tiny torso (Widescope, plenty of others) or something else like dicked-up hands (CLAWS Commander). Those lines are just too unfocused, aesthetically, for me. There are some odd proportions here and there, Alpine is awesome but has a little head. But then, so do many of the ME figures. 25th RnR has a head sculpt with awesome character to it, but is too small. So, I take the good with the bad. |

I could never get into these lines due to the proportions. They had some great ideas, but they just didnt work during production. I loved the new Torch design, but between the tiny waist and bulbous shoulders, I couldn't support the line. Thankfully, there are some casters that cast some of those wonderful headsculpts. So now I can use them for ME customs. Lol

Agreed, that Gung-Ho was very well done. It was a sign of things to come with the pinless joints.

I liked the Crosshairs figure, Shipwreck in soft camo, Cobra Claws Commander, Tiger Claw was a neat paint application, The Storm Shadow with the Cobra insignia over his face still is one of my favourite versions of SS( even if he is wearing a skirt), Gung-ho with removable hat.
Opps, how could I forget the spectacled Dr. Mindbender( the only version of this character that I have ever liked)[ PS, this is the VvV version with white lab coat]. The re-paints of ARAH figs were great from this era, such as the green vipers, python patrol lamprey and cyber-viper( I completely hate this character in his traditional orange). |
