Just wondering, how did people attach all the gear the vintage Alpine came with?
When I had it, I put the rope through the backpack. Do you guys have pics of how your Alpine's climbing gear is set up?

Does anyone have any idea how the vintage Alpine's climbing gear is meant to go together?

I can't really see any way that it's all supposed to fit together. The axe snaps into the backpack, and then I'd roll up the rope and grappling hooks and toss it over that. That would leave him to use his grappling gun, or submachine gun. Having the rope and the grappling gun was kind of superfluous really. All he needed was one or the other, with the rope having more play value. I always figured he could only carry so much at one time, especially when climbing a mountain. As a kid, I made a strap for the submachine gun (the single best weapon any G.I. Joe figure ever came with) so he could take that along with him.

It's how you like. The rope was tied to both hooks. At one point in time the space on top of his backpack was intended to hold his smaller machine gun. However his pick axe fits there as well as on the back. Some have even put the grapple hook gun there.
Some people do either, I always clipped his axe on the back side. 3dJoes.com shows it that way as well. Alpine - 3DJOES Here's the card art showing some sort of weapon on the top part of his pack. There was talk on the Facebook Discussion group about this and a bunch of preproduction sketches of Alpine. https://www.facebook.com/groups/540476526008915/

To add, Ron Rudat's concepts (as seen on the FB Discussion, you need to join that group!) shows the Baretta SMG there and a preproduction sketch of the backpack has the note: "provision for weapon" on the top portion of the backpack.
Others have been very creative with their layouts... Carson with 3DJoes received a few pictures and others have posted the center clip of the smaller gun fits in the back clip of the backpack as well. Pretty versatile.

Thanks. Interesting to see how people se theirs up. As a kid, I put the rope through the hole in the backpack and one end on the pick axe and the other end had the hook with the other hook sliding in between. That way, I put the hook that's in the middle of the string hooked onto something and I can pull him up like using a pulley to simulate him climbing.

I can't remember if I had the rope wedged in between his head and the bag or the crapping gun.

I always placed the grappling gun in the slot at the top of the back pack while the pick went in the obvious rear slot. The grappling gun never stayed firm as much as I would have liked it to, but it seemed to be the obvious choice since there was no strap attached.
I always thought it weird that the grappling gun was the same mold as Snow Job's old laser rifle. It simply had a hook attached. |
