I was just talking to a guy locally who has a factory sealed Defiant that he is selling. He's taking best offers and currently has a $2800 offer on the table that he's considering. A Factory Sealed Defiant seems like a dream come true and I cannot imagine there are more than a few in existence, I mean, why would someone buy that thing and not open it? I think these kinda things only pop up because someones mom or grandma bought one in the 80s as a gift and found out the person either already had one or was getting one from someone else and that person just stashed it in the attic or basement and forgot about it. Anyway, I just wanted to get opinions on that price. To me it seems like a bargain and $5,000 might be close to retail. Thoughts?

I'd say it's over priced, since I've seen MISB Flaggs go for $2000. I can't imagine spending over $500 for anyone toy. Hell, that's too much! Maybe $2500 is in the ballpark.
It's on you. I'm not sure why collectors keep coming on here asking what they should pay for something. What do you think it's worth? Is it your holy grail? Are you a hard core MISB collector? I have over 500 pieces MOC/MISB and yes the majority are ME. I don't have the need to have any ARAH MISB. Lets say you spend $3000 on it, then get it home and put it down and go to work and your basement floods because your washing machine blew a gasket. Do you think your insurance company is going to give you $3000 grand for a now soaked box? From my experience, no, they won't. So if you get it, keep it up off the ground and away from all pipes. Defiants go for way more than Flaggs. Trust me, I've been on the lookout.

My intent in asking was to see if anyone had any first hand experience to determine if that was a fair value. Usually I go to sold listings on ebay to determine what they sell for. Its really the best way to figure out the value of something. Problem here is that there is nothing in sold listings on ebay to compare. If I went on there and saw one sold for $2,000 I wouldnt have a reason to get input from this forum. I just figured maybe someone from the collector community has first hand experience and can therefore help me determine if I would be overpaying based on current market value or getting a great deal. Because I'm always looking for the deals and rarely pay market value.

The fact that there aren't many completed or sold listings on eBay could be a clue as to the rarity and value. A MISB Defiant has been and always will be worth more $$$ than the Flagg.
An offer of $2800 seems right to me. However that would be the max I would ever offer or consider. (I'm too poor to get one.)

I paid 3k for one last month and it included the shipping sleeve. so $2,800 seems ok.
Like everything else it comes down to if you can afford it and how bad you want it. I would be surprised if you find one for much cheaper though. |

I picked one up about 5 or so years ago. Mint in sealed box. I planned on leaving it sealed but it began to drive me insane! So after awhile i decided to open her up. Biggest mistake ever! Once i had everything out of the box i found large amounts of parts were damaged or yellow dispite the box being in very good condition. Both bay doors were cracked and broken, Payload was very yellowed. This was a major set back for me as i shelled out 2500 for it which at the time was more than i spent on my car. I was able to sort out the junk and sold the Box to Help cover some of the expenses. My point is either don't open it at all or at least ask prior to purchase if it can be inspected for damage before you get it home.

Also TrueJoeFan painted out that the ARAH stuff still Fades, discolors even if it's never been opened. Last edited by hahoo3; 01-06-2015 at 01:14 PM.. |

Wow that's crazy. I guess more Flange sold back in the day and are now out there in gen pop. I'm glad I have no interest in a Defiant. The gantry looks cool but the shuttle is just not my thing. I'm still saving for a Flagg.
