I got the Dragonfly, SHARC, and a FANG randomly one year for my birthday in Nov. of '84. (I was into Transformers and didn't get another Joe until '87 or so.) Still have all three and the Dragonfly only ever got one busted tab on the rear rotor and a couple stress marks.

Airborne from Woolworths in Honolulu HI while on vacation. Followed the next day by SNAKE armor and Cobra Commander. That began my love of the figures. Still have both figures and parts of the armor.

A straight arm Short-Fuze from Kmart. Then Breaker or Grunt. Got them all, then pitched them when the swivel-arm versions were released. Even back then I couldn't stand the fact that they couldn't hold their weapons with a 2 handed grip .

Ah, the good old days. I found my first Joes at KMart and was completely blown away. My first vehicle was the HAL and I know for sure my first figure was Flash. The similar look of Grand Slam and Flash along with their visors was so cool to me at the time.
I got 3 carded figures that day and the second was Short Fuse, since he had the cool clear visor too and lots of accessories overall. I can't remember what the 3rd figure was, but it likely was either Zap or Snake Eyes. I thought those were the most interesting of the original group, and my neighbor bought Rock and Roll, so I held off on getting him right away. On a side note, one of my greatest surprises from buying early Joes was walking into a Gold Circle in 1983 and finding the all-new Joes on the shelves that I had no idea were being made. My eyes about fell out of my head when I looked through the 1983 catalog for the first time.

Snake Eyes, Version 1: Straight Arm. My mom wouldn't let me buy army guys, because she didn't want me to grow up to join the military (because in her head somehow every kid who plays with military toys does?). I had a ton of Star Wars toys, but that was ok because it wasn't "real".
Because everyone I knew was getting into GI JOE, She finally relented as long as the figure wasn't "an army guy" (Basically in any kind of green). So in order of appearance I got the aforementioned Snake Eyes, followed by the straight arm versions of: Scarlet (she had no problem buying me female figures because she was strong on equality, and I loved having them instead of a straight on sausage fest), Cobra Trooper, and Mail away Cobra Commander (Couldn't find the officer on the figure racks in my town). Finally, when I tricked her into buying me an issue of GI JOE (#4, actually) in a pile of superhero and Star Wars comics, She gave up and bought me the Vamp with straight arm Clutch and the then newly released JUMP with Silver Pads swivel arm Grand Slam. It was a slippery downhill slope from thereon... |

I don't honestly remember who my 1st Joe was but I do remember getting the Tomahawk for xmas in 86 and its been my Favorite vehicle since. I remember my brother stole my lift ticket and tried to convince me that it came with Crazy legs. I got him back shortly after that when my bro got to cool for Joes. Luckily I've never had that problem.

Stinger with the Stinger Driver was my first Joe item. I got it for Christmas and it was magic. I never had a blueshift, but it was my most coveted item. They grey shirt took his place in my army.
