Missile arms are a big deal as stated below. They are indeed hard to replace and if the whale was improperly stored... a lot of times they are bent goofy or simply broken. Good luck and happy holidays!

good stuff mentioned so far…
sled door hingen on the body of the whale vertical vanes on the propellors also the missile arms are very difficult to remove from the shell intact, so if you are buying a green shell make sure it has both of those missile arms included, attached and or unbroken. also watch out for sun damage. it can turn the green pieces on the vehicle a darker shade of green that might not match up if you are buying parts from different sources. |

these are all great tips…and would have been invaluable prior to getting my whale. I ended up with a broken front hinge which means I will have to replace the bottom shell to fix the problem.
Another thing to look for is to insure all of the windows are intact, including the front hatch. There are also 6 depth charges included with the whale, not 5. It's easy to overlook since the depth charge launcher only fits 5.

What would you guys say would be a good price for a starter? One that would function but maybe need a couple of the more rare parts to be 100%.
I would be looking for one my son and I could kick around until he gets old enough to appreciate keeping one complete, at which point I would get the last few parts.

If you get parts and/or shells in lots that include at least a few parts you need, you can sell the rest. Whale parts are always in demand. My restoration mostly paid for itself.

If anybody is looking for whale parts, I've got a ton. I've got a few top windshields, front sled doors, missile arms and boxes, etc. I've got couple vertical vanes also. Everything else I have tons of. Only reason I can't complete them is because I have no lower bodies with unbroken front hinges…..

The other thing that I don't know if anyone mentioned was the sled mechanism. If you see the white button is recessed in really far, then the support arm inside the base is broken so the sled launch won't work anymore. Look to see that the white button is almost level with the top chassis when looking at pics.
Good luck. The Whale was always my favourite vehicle. Sad that I sold mine.

I restored a couple whale's last year for me and a friend... I also have a lot of extra spare parts that I have no intent to use anytime in the future... Just been waiting to put the leftovers on eBay... PM me if your interested... Also the pegs that the missle boxes clamp to are very important to have unbroken!!!

Great. The big issues seem to involve the sled launcher, door, and missile pods. I'm going to try to get one in person sometime soon and piece it together over time. I not real concerned over the sixth depth charge, if it doesn't store on the vehicle its not a big deal. Thanks for the great input, I have wanted a Whale so bad since I first saw the commercial back in 1985. So here's hoping.

In response to price, my buddy and I routinely pick up whales to complete that are about 80% for $15-20 so don't go any higher than that
