Seriously what was Hasbro thinking back then when they released the big Flagg base? Plus who in their right mind besides rich people would even try to buy the thing in the first place?

I'm assuming they were thinking lets make one of the coolest playsets ever. I had one as a kid and we were far from rich.

As dismissive as it may seem: This.
The 80's were a decade of conspicuous consumption on a grand scale. Given that it was before electronics and video games had become the most popular thing for kids (Atari made a big splash early in the decade, with Nintendo on the rise as the decade closed out), the "big ticket" items became mega-toys instead. Plastic and production and shipping costs were also a whole lot cheaper. Hasbro basically was making enough on G.I. Joe that they could afford to make a "bragging rights" item...and they did. |

It also was partially produced by a plastic garbage can company. Back then, Hasbro made the vehicles in the u.s. so shipping from overseas wasn't a cost issue like it is today.

They were thinking about making money and I'm certain they did. I ached for one as a kid, but knew better than to ask my parents for one. I finally got my own about two years ago and, flaws and all, I adore it and what it represents.

Playsets like the Flagg were like Doll Houses for boys. Barbies Dream House was massive! They still make large playsets and they still sell! Its true. Everything from plastic doll houses to fisherprice play sets. Hasbro saw an opportunity to create one of the most innovative and interactive play-sets for boys ever and they seized it!

Hasbro was thinking the same thoughts as Mattel, when they built the Barbie Dream House or Castle Greyskull; even Kenner had the Death Star and the Millenium Falcon.

A friend of mine got one for Christmas. His family was not rich. He said it was about the only thing he got that year, but well worth it. I remember the first time I walked down into his basement and saw it. It was followed by many return trips to the basement.
