^ This. If only the current action figure toy market could sustain big playsets like back in the 80s.
*sigh*

Considering inflation, $89.99 then would have been $198.57 now. So to answer the question, yes, it was a high ticket item.

I know what you mean, I have kids around my age when I was into GI Joe etc.. and there are so few big playsets to ask santa for.
I miss the awe of Christmas 1983 when there was skystriker, gi joe hq and ewok village under the tree. Other than the turtles,it does not seem like any toyline can support something big and cool. Even star wars does not put out big vehicles or playsets anymore |

You're either too young to recollect, or otherwise forgetful of, just how incredible huge GI JOE was back in the 1980's, especially '84, '85, '86. If you were male and in the the target demographic (or even a little out of it) you probably had some GI JOE toys. It was that ubiquitous. In an environment like that, you can do big things, and Hasbro did. We'll probably never see anything like the U.S.S. Flagg or the Defiant again. It was a truly unique confluence of events that allowed such toys to be made and made affordable for a middle-class family.

Inflation Calculator: Bureau of Labor Statistics That means to me that Hasbro could make a new Flagg with updated features and a few new ones (using the same concept as the MOTUC Castle Grayskull) for about the same price ($300) and sell t to us vis pre-order and online via Hasbro Toy Shop! Quote:

More Big ticket items please!

Not rich, but had a guilty dad who only got me on weekends and I got it for Christmas. It was put together, played with twice and sold at a garage sale by my grand mother.

Coreystinson, I'm 34 by the way. Old enough to know about castle greyskull and 1983-1984 star wars when I was a kid back then. My parents couldn't afford big crap like Flagg ship. The only fancier stuff I ever got were star wars mail in stuff and the life size chewbacca bandolier. That and a few heman vehicles like land shark. I never got star wars vehicles back then and even when I'm in my 30s I don't have any of the newer vehicles since they're more spending than back in the 1980s.

The real question should be is who lost the molds? They ought to put a bounty on that persons head. The Flagg was the largest play set in history, it was the crown of my collecting when I got mine. If I had brought my grades up back when it was released I would have gotten it then. They could make it with PVC or some other cheap plastic now if they find the molds. If I was running the company, I would take the risk, Hasbro took big toy risk every year with starwars. The risk may bring back some market share in toy sales.
Some people dislike it cause they don't have the room, answer, buy a bigger house. Some people dislike it because it cost so much, answer, get a part time job to buy one. |
