I'm working on it! I have every carded figure documented. Here's all of them with a little bit of cleanup:
The G.I. Joe Rolodex: The Digital File Card Repository - 3DJOES Before I make the book I will clean them up to the level of quality of my carded posters: Carded 3DJoes (82-85) - 3DJOES The second one of those carded posters (86-87) just printed, so I'm now through 1987 on cleaning up the carded figures. I'm also working my way through the vehicles. I've shot and edited 82-83 for the new poster, and just re-shot 84-85 for the next one (or two). It is a labor intense process, but one I greatly enjoy. I do this all on nights and weekends, so unless someone offers me a job to do this kind of work full time the books are going to take a while. Please be patient with me and support the posters if you can. Thanks! Carson |

^^ They're all items that I've collected, photographed and edited myself. I see it as a collecting guide, similar to Bellomo's books on collecting Joe, which were not licensed by Hasbro.
That said, I would be happy to partner with IDW or Hasbro directly! I could save them a tremendous amount of time, having already collected all the pieces, photograph most and edited many of them. I have ~2000 hours involved in the project to-date. I can't imagine they'd want to rebuild that wheel. |

You are the website I was referring to in my original post. I'm very jealous of your project, as I enjoy taking pics of my collection, but don't have the resources or talent you have. I think your posters are awesome and I'm very excited that you will be doing a book at some time. I'll definitely have to keep my eye out for it. It would be great to include not only the card and box art, but the catalog art as well as posters, puzzles and such. That's what's nice about the TF book, not only is it the figure art, but the back battle scenes, Japanese artwork some posters and puzzles as well. The really cool thing, which I don't know if you have access to is the non produced items. Some cool G2 stuff I've never seen before, as well as early drafts and concept art. The TF book is also an IDW release, so I don't know if they would help if you reached out to them, but that would definitely make it fully sanctioned if they did, and maybe open up doors to stuff you don't have now. Anyway, I love the site and am definitely looking forward to the book when it comes out.

So I just got the book "Transformers Legacy", which has every vintage TF figure's box art for G1, Japanese and G2 along with non released figures. ... I know we have some websites out there that show the artwork, but it would be amazing to have one book with every piece of Joe card/box art from the 80's and 90's. Who do we need to petition to get this?

If you want to petition anyone, the best bet is IDW, the license holder for Transformers print collateral. The truth is that Joe books haven't historically sold as well as Transformers books, so it'd go a long way to showing IDW that there's interest if a significant (at least a thousand) number of people asked for the book. It's worked in the past; petitions are why they did a modern-day continuation of the old Marvel G1 comic series, called ReGeneration One. Strong sales on TF Legacy will probably be necessary as well, though initial indications are that the book is doing very well so you may not have to worry about such things. In terms of legalities, if you want an official book, you'd have to go through Hasbro. Since Hasbro generally doesn't deal with individuals, you'd probably need to find a publisher. IDW is far and away your best bet, as they already have the license. A different publisher would have to be persuaded that a: the project is viable in it's own right and b: it will be profitable enough to warrant buying a moderately pricey license. Now, if you want an unofficial book, that's a different ballgame and not my area of expertise. In brief, you have to be very careful about trademarks and copyrights, and even then you might still not be able to legally distribute on Amazon, or in certain countries. Carson, if you are serious about pitching the idea to IDW, drop me a line and I'd be happy to give you some advice. Glancing at your website, it seems that your focus is more on the packaging and bio cards themselves, rather than the artwork specifically. That's a different direction than we went, but could make a really neat project. -JimS |

Jim, First off, let me say what an awesome book you made. I'm loving it. Also, thanks for taking the time to weigh in and give us a professional opinion/view on the subject. I don't know much about starting a petition, but I think that might be a great way to let IDW know we want this.

Howdy, guys! Bill and I would love to try to tackle a project like this. When we started working on Transformers Legacy we had no idea how close we'd get to a comprehensive volume. With the help of Hasbro, Takara in Japan, and private collectors, we were able to track down almost all of the original art, or at least first generation production-quality copies. I'm hopeful that, if we got the license for this style of book for Joe, we'd be able to shake loose some good material. My understanding is that Hasbro's vaults are way more complete for Joe than for TF, so hopefully I wouldn't need to rely on collectors as much.

Wow, Jim, thank you for jumping in on the conversation. I just ordered your book on Amazon and will get in touch as soon as I've had a chance to review it. Maybe it will change how I’ve been thinking about organizing these books to date. After reading your comment, I realized I posted the wrong link above. I am absolutely all about the art. I posted the Rolodex page (with the filecards) but meant to post the Yearbook page with all of the carded figures still MOC. Please have a look at that. They are all clickable images too. The G.I. Joe Yearbook: A Visual Index of Carded Figures - 3DJOES Here's a quick explanation of my current vision for the books, entitled "Collecting the Art of G.I. Joe" Volume 1: 1982-1994 figures. V1 would feature every carded figure from 1982-1994, as you can see on my Yearbook page (but much more polished). It would also feature art for the mail always like The Fridge. I envision the front of the page being the full bleed carded figure, and the back of the page featuring the file card, fan recollections of seeing the product on shelves, geared up images of the figures from my 360 spins, and possibly pre-pro art. Here is an example of the level of digital retouching that you’d see throughout the book (click the bar above the image to see it full size): Volume 2: 1982-1994 vehicles. V2 would feature the front panel of every vehicle box full bleed on the front of each vehicle page. On the back I envision fan recollections of seeing the product on shelves, images of the vehicles from my 360 spins and image galleries, and possibly pre-pro art. Here is an example of the level of digital retouching that you’d see throughout the book (click the bar above the image to see it full size): If those two volumes sell well, I could see making a third. V3 could feature other memorable art from the catalogs, magazines, posters, books, etc. Last edited by 3DJoes; 10-21-2014 at 10:46 PM.. |
