Picked up a complete rolling thunder and the front end to the clap a couple months ago at a flea market i go to for $25, but there are so many dealers and resellers that go to the markets around here. its hard to find anything, last year my friend picked up a night boomer for $20 missing one of the front small missiles with perfect decals. i traded him a couple extra vehicles he needed for it. so stuff is out there, just have to hunt and be there first

I find stuff at Flea Markets all the time. Usually bags of parts or incomplete vehicles. One of my best scores was an almost complete Rolling Thunder and a bunch of figures for 30 bucks. Awhile back I got 4 huge boxes full of vehicles, Rattler, Whale, Moray, dragonfly, thunder machine and a joe HQ. Had to be thirty vehicles total with tons of small parts. Got all that for 40 bucks.

Wow, great find! I see a lot of collectors finding stuff in flea markets. We don't really have them around, but the 2nd hand stores price the stuff high. They look everything up! :( Craigslist sucks, everyone on there asks ebay prices or higher and they're stuff usually in incomplete. They think if a complete vehicle sold for $40, that they're shell is worth $40. I'd love to keep going through estate sales, you can find gems, nice furniture etc, but just don't have the time. |

No. Ever since that TV show Personal FX: The Collectibles Show was aired in the early 1990's, some people have been more aware of what they're selling. And the internet hasn't helped much either. On occasion, you'll find a loose G.I. Joe here or there but, very few rare gems like in years past.

It was originally marked $300, then $220, and for a near complete TD, that wasn't beyond the realm of reason... however I just bought a motorhome and couldn't spend that kind of $$$, so I offered $100, they countered with $130. I was about to jump on it, but decided to look around a bit more. They guy came back, desperate to sell (they were an estate company that only makes money on the sales) and he offered $110! I was like "Oh, alright, I guess." but inside I was screaming like a 9 year old girl. What sucked was all the stuff I had to leave behind... :(

I usually find loose Joes and/or weapons in bagfulls sold at Goodwill. I did luck out last year and found an incomplete but still in relatively good shape Terrordrome at a yard sale last year. Missing some walls, chairs, the gun turrets, and a couple monitors, but the elevator still works great, and only has one small crack in the shell. Well worth $2.00.

The 90's was the golden time to buy used Joes. Just the right time for parents to unload their kids toys, and for adults to unload their childhood. The internet wasn't active till the late 90's so noone tried to ebay price everything regardless of condition because its "collectible!"
Of course without an online reference, you often fell for mismashed figures you couldn't place. But for a buck, you weren't too upset. Anyways, I haven't seen any since last year. The Starvation Army has an antiques and collectibles shop near my work. They had a pretty decent toy section, until recently. Trouble was, the guy in charge of the toy section was ebay pricing everything regardless, he also can't tell Joes from recent Corps! figures. He was selling figures for $3-5 each. The only thing I paid $5 for was a nm TRU Black Dragon. Luckily, if he wasn't there, the other people were more interested in just selling crap to move merchandise, so I got a few 3/$10, or 4/$10 or even $1.50 each. Needless to say, I usually bought when he wasn't there. I got both TRU Vypras, JvC Alley Viper, Nullifier, Hardball, BC Roadblock, VvV D. Mindbender, RoC covergirl with LJ's head, and for some reason they had a retaliation Lady Jaye. If any accesories were there, I'd gear them up with whatever, since it usually didn't go to the right figures, anyway. Also got some TMNT, a beat up Baron von Joy, and Lego Minifigs. I don't know what they did, but the whole toy section is gone. Last edited by Zarana X; 07-14-2014 at 04:08 PM.. |

got this for $40 at a garage sale (well, my mother did for me...she's awesome to still buy toys for her 40 year-old son) back in 2008
it turned out to be pretty complete...maybe 95% complete, needs Y-pins, tow vehicle parts, admiral's launch boat, and an unbroken deflector shield support...had all the more difficult things like the mast cap and deck railing. Sorry that angle of the Joe room doesn't look too great right now, but wanted to show the $40 Flagg is still the center piece. Maybe 1% of my collection is NOT from Garage Sales/Flea Markets/Toy shows/Friends. If you are patient enough, you can find stuff at places other than eBay. Shoot, even the Defiant was bought at an Estate Auction for $37.50 a few years back. So the stuff is there and one of the best parts of my collecting is searching and finding this stuff. |
