Hey guys,
I just have a few random questions about the debut of the Joe toys and comic way back in 1982 that hopefully some of you can answer. Sorry if these have been discussed before. 1) Does anybody know the exact month in 1982 the Joe toys (carded 9-backs, vehicles, etc.) first started hitting shelves? 2) Did all the vehicles come out at the same time as the first 9 carded figures? 3) How long after the initial nine carded figures were on shelves did the carded Cobra and Cobra Officer and other 11-back figures start hitting shelves? Anyone know the exact month? 4) Did the G.I.Joe ARAH #1 comic really come out in June of 1982 as the cover implies or was it more like July or August? 5) Does anybody know if the pre-production molds exist for the Cobra and Cobra Officer that were pictured in the first toy insert catalogs? They are completely different molds from head to toe from the actual figures that were released. Or were these just painted mock-ups? Thank you!

ok I will give this a shot.
I know for a fact that in 1982 we had a summer vacation before school to Montana. On that trip I was thrilled to find Zap, Flash, Short Fuze, and Rock 'n Roll because I had not seen them anywhere else yet. I believe Scarlett was one of those too. I remember that because all the heavy weapons guys seemed to come later. To get the real answer I would go find the microfilms of a newspaper and check the Sunday ads. If you find Joes you are probably pretty close to the date they hit shelves. You could ask Kirk Bozigian on facebook too, heck he probably knows all the answers to your questions. Now to answer the comic question if Wiki is right (big if) comics were sold 3 months prior to the cover date. The general practice of most mainstream comic book companies since the creation of the comic book in the 1930s was to date individual issues putting the name of a month (and much later the year as well) on the cover which was generally two months after the actual release date. For example, a 1951 issue of Superman which had the cover date of July would have been published two months earlier from that date in the month of May, generally speaking. In 1973 the discrepancy between the cover date and the publishing date went from two months to three months.[2] In 1989 the cover date and publishing date discrepancy was changed back to two months, though generally each comic book company now uses its own system. Of the two major American comic book publishers, DC Comics continues to put cover dates on the cover. Marvel Comics stopped putting cover dates on the cover in October 1999; instead, the "cover" date was moved to the indicia on an interior page.

The comics were always early from their date. So it was more likely May.

I know I had gotten Breaker and Short Fuse right away. It took a while for me to find Stalker, Snake Eyes, and Rock N Roll but I found all three of them at the same time. They were the 3rd, 4th, and 5th figures in my collection. The only straight arm vehicle driver I had was Grand Slam so I'm guessing the Vamp, MMS, and MoBAT might have been more popular and tough to find. When I did get them on Christmas it must have been in 1983 because my Steeler and Clutch were 1.5 versions. Both of my Cobra Officer and Trooper had the swivel arm grip too so it might have taken me a while to find them as well. My brother had Zap and Grunt in straight arm, and I had Flash but don't recall when we had gotten them. Sorry I don't have any further info. I was only 7.
It's funny you brought this up I was just wondering today how exactly did they roll these out in 1982.

Snake Eyes and Flash on 9 back cards were my first Joes. I picked them up at Children's Palace during the summer of 82 (they were my reward for singing some songs at my local old folks home). I was really into Star Wars at that time, so it was a very big deviation for me to pick out Joes instead. A few months later (probably that fall), I sent in for my straight arm "Mickey Mouse" Cobra Commander. Those were good times.

From what I remember, the figures initially hit in the late summer of 82. I can recall some of them being difficult to find, especially Scarlett. I think it was some months later after the initial release that I finally found her and some others. The Cobra figures also showed up a little later. I am pretty sure the RAM and JUMP came out first, I remember seeing them on the shelves the same day I first saw the figures. The VAMP, MMS, and HAL came out more in the fall, I am pretty sure. I can remember finally seeing them after school had started cause I was the first of my friends to get any of them. The MOBAT was not out until closer to Xmas. I know the comic came out a little before the figures, because there was a corner store on the end of my street that sold comics. I had seen the first issue there several times, but did not buy it until after I found the toys which was a while later.
Hope that helps a little. |

So...what was it like when you guys first saw our beloved ARAH Joes on shelves? I was born in 79, so it is almost like Joe always existed, and I am wondering what it was like seeing something so cool and poseable after years of 5 points of articulation...

It was like finding gold. I remember going to 2 Guys, K-Mart & Sears to get some of the figures back in the summer of 82. The vehicles came out a little later and I got the Mobat for Christmas that year.
