I don't know how versed most of you are in the Red Shadows, but It goes much deeper then the Red Shadows convention set, which as cool as it was, IMO, was almost an insult to the Vintage Line. I have researched several sites, Wikipedia was the most useful. Long before the us gave us cobra as we know and love it today, action force got its bad guy faction, the Red Shadows. Led by Baron IronBlood, a wife haired fanatic with a generic iron mask. The first figures were more adaptable with star wars figures, with 5 point articulation. At first glance they kinda suck, until you look at the diversity of these base figures running into series 2. There were some wild characters including kracken and skeketron. Red Wolf was one of my favorites, who was the driver of a tricked out red tie fighter called the roboskull, he was actually a repainted tie fighter pilot. Then in wave 2 we got repaints of cobra commander, called red lazer, red jakal, which was a reoainted destro, with a red hiss tank. Then the us, came out with cobra. Following the us success. The red shadows became cobra. This was an intertesting twist, as the Baron became cobra commander. He fought red jakal, and defeated him, making him work for the newly donned cobra commander. During the fight, CC, choked out Red Jackal. , trying to say the word destroy, all he got out was destro....and CC called him that as an insult. It was an intertesting twist on the Cobra mythos. If you haven't read up on this or ventured into the vintage toys, you are cheating yourself out of one heck of a treat

You may want to spend some time over at bloodforthebaron.com. Your recap of Action Force history isn't completely accurate.

You can read all the old Battle Action Force comics, look at the toys by Palitoy and check the customs on bloodforthebaron.com as well. A lot of the comics stories have been colored from black and white. So its a really different experience. Its well worth a look.

I don't see how the Red Shadows box set was an insult at all. If anything, it opened up other collectors (like me) who previously hadn't paid much attention to it.
It gave us an awesome update to the Red Shadow trooper, as well as the excellent Black Major figure. I would have liked to have seen a Baron Ironblood or some of the other Red Shadow t-crotch figures make the set, but it is easily one of my favorites. It even inspired me to whip up a few customs based on the Red Shadows theme. |

Technically, the Red Shadows didn't become Cobra; only the Baron became CC (and as you said, Red Jackal became Destro). But the Red Shadows continued via the Black Major, Red Laser, and others. They fought Cobra on several occasions, as the Black Major wanted revenge on CC's betrayal. The Red Shadows have returned in the more recent Larry Hama comics in IDW and previous to that in DDP. Fan fiction supposed that the Baron was ususurped by CC and betrayed the Red Shadows so that they couldn't learn his act as so many knew his face. Later, the Baron rose back to lead the Shadows. But that was a fan comic, not any real continuity.
Once again, read Blood For the Baron to get how Palitoy created Action Force and the Red Shadows and why they incorporated GI Joe into the story.

Id LOVE it if IDW would reprint the Battle Action Force comics into trades, starting from whenever Baron Ironblood first appeared! I know theres likely numerous rights issues....
G.I.JOE: THE ACTION FORCE DISAVOWED, anyone?

Bloodforthebaron.com have already done this in colour and they sell them from that website, well they did a few years back. They have done a lot of the old black and white prints by now. Or just read them from the site.
