So, I recently won an eBay lot of Whale parts that included 4 unbroken vertical vanes...which I needed to complete my restored Whale. I got my package today, and when I clipped the vanes to the propeller shroud, I noticed they fit so tight that they kind of squish the shroud down, which also causes the vanes to slightly bow out. After seeing this, I decided against connecting the bottom pin on the vanes to the shroud, and just let them hang from the top pin.
Is this normal? If it is, I can see why there are so many broken sets of vanes out there, as the pressure could easily cause the tabs that hold them to the shroud to break, and the bowing could cause them to split where the thin plastic areas are. Also, if you have unbroken fan vanes, do you display them completely attached to the shroud (both top and bottom pins), and have you had any problems?

Maybe keep the intact ones locked up and display it with broken ones taped together, or no vanes at all.
I recently traded off one that was still intact and it's crazy how fragile it was.

I ordered a set of Vanes from Broken Arrow, they were supposed to be a sturdier verison than the other repros. I will use these and put my original vanes up for safe keeping. I have a set that almost perfect except for a tab thats half broke on the bottom of one. I say buy some repros and keep the others locked up.....I still didnt get mine from broken arrow yet. i ordered them in April, so whenever i get them I will show them off
Also wouldnt help to soak the Vanes in Baby Oil?

The holes are made too small on a lot of these from the factory and put a lot of stress on the entire assembly. You can take a small drill bit and pin-vice and drill those holes out just a tiny bit and the fins will sit in perfectly. The drilling is completely unnoticable when finished even while the fan is unassembled.
Seems like when I was a kid I stuck the pointy end of a small nail into the hole to stretch it out some so the fins would go in since I was afraid I would break them off installing them otherwise. I wouldn't dare try that now though since it might leave stress marks on the old plastic. |

Are those repros a slightly different color, or is that just the picture?

the color difference is probably due to the difficulty in mixing the color pigment exactly the same when casting
