I never experienced it when it was current, but I've liked a lot of the non-gimmick non-T-Crotch figures I've gotten. The line has some really good new costumes and some cool new characters.
Other than the bulbous shoulders and rocky start, I never understood why this era got so much ire. |

Part of the problem is that most of the figures didn't live up to the fantastic card art. Another thing there are a lot of them that have their forearms sculpted at the wrong angle, so they have a hard time hold their weapons correctly. Personally, I felt too many figures had short torsos. They look like they are all legs.

I loved the New Sculpt era. It was what first introduced me to GI Joe, and there were so many great things about the figures. The figures were durable, a lot were well articulated, there were cool characters, and they had some of my favorite head sculpts. Of course there was a lot of bad figures, but in general I liked them as much, if not more than the modern figures.
Some of my favorite figures were Cross Hair V1, and Dart v1. |

But yeah, I think there is a lot of good here: 02's Ripper v2 Dr Mindbender v3 Shipwreck v5 Sgt Stalker v1 Nunchuck v3 03 was great for new characters too Blackout v1 Burnout v1 Cobra Commander v16 Overkill v2 Scalpel v1 Switch Gears v1 Gung Ho v11 Lady Jaye v4 Zarana v2 Widescope v1 Tunnel Rat v4 Tomax & Xamot v4 Wild Bill v6 04's Hi-tech v1 Kamakura v3 Scarlett v4 Sgt Stalker v4 Wild Bill v9 Destro v11 Dr Mindbender v5 Electric EEL v1 Neurotoxin v1 Storm Shadow v15 Heavy Duty v8 Shipwreck v8 05's Bombstrike v1 Crocmaster v2 Gung Ho v16 Snake Eyes v 23 Over Kill v6 Spirit Iron-Knife v1 Sgt Mutt v1 Long Range v2 Medi-Viper v1 Major Bludd v6 Finally, 06's Med Alert v1 Low Light v6 Grand Slam v3 Monkey Wrench v2 Interrogator v3 GI Jane v1 Guillotine v1 Grim Skill v1 Gallows v1 Nullifier v3 Depending on personal taste, there is probably more or less, but I think there is some real gems in those few years. Yeah, they don't fit in with OG O-Ring or Modern, but they're still fun toys. |

Mixed bag for me. The inconsistent designs are what put the nail in the coffin. When you have a line that has figures that don't look right displayed next to other figures in the same wave it's a deal breaker. That aside, there were gems. I plan to reacquire a few in fact.

The t-crotchers and the Takara wave were bad. Things got messed up in year one and never recovered. Little consistency.
Vehicles ranged from great (humvees) to awful (the "Smokescreen" Humvee). There were some interesting character designs (and some failed ones, like every Zartan!) and new characters. |

Mixed bag for sure. Proportions were horrible and hid a lot of great designs. I remember a Joe fan won a FHM contest (Luke...something) and got to see a lot of the prototype sculpts before they were sent overseas to be translated to toys. He said they were beautiful, and that the proportion issues defiantly didn't come from the designers, but the factories. They were getting great by the end, Major Barrage and Bombstrike still look great, and even the early waves had Dart (who still looks good alongside ME figures) and a pretty awesome Duke.

Other than the bulbous shoulders and rocky start, I never understood why this era got so much ire. Look at this thread I started back in 2011: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...atrocious.html |
