arch2B,
It was your use of the words "ass handed to us" that I take issue with. Yes we take the enemy can and always will inflict damage on us. ied's would be ineffective if we were fighting a war instead of hanging out like a police force. You never heard of ied's until after the war's end and the occupation began. If at war, we would sit back and pound the living hell out of the cities, not caring if any survived. Same goes for nam. Anytime we waged war and carpet bombed, they came running to the peace talks. When we stopped, they started fighting again. Look up Operation Linebacker. As Britain learned many times, you will sustain constant losses when you occupy someone. Unless you remove or kill all locals, the enemy will always be able to kill your troops. Armies are not designed to be police forces, especially ours. We are designed to fight on the move against superior numbers and history has proven we are the best at that. We are the blitzkrieg now. History also shows we are not as effective we not allowed to use a combined arms doctrine like in Somalia. Our troops were denied the support of air and armor support because it might look bad. We lost 26 troops because of this, yet killed in the hundreds or thousands, completely surrounded. I wasn't being a prick, just defending our service men and women from words that could influence people who will not take the time to fact check. Ass handed to us should be reserved for events like Pearl Harbor and 9/11. Other than those events, we have been handing out the asses for about 100yrs now. |

Depending on the desired outcome there was another operation that would ensure a quick ending to the war as well as many casualties on the other side. It was known as OPERATION CHUCK NORRIS.

frankly, thats your interpretation of the words or phrase, not mine. i'm not going to argue symantics so i'll just let it go with i'm not denying your rebuttal at all. i just don't take the same meaning from what i said as you do and i doubt everyone will read it the same way. i am simply not as articulate in my responses as others here are.

and don't think for a minute that my post in any way discredits our service men and women or was intended to. we need not go about beating our chest proving whom is the bigger patriot, etc.

that is my belief as well however current planning and policy implementation does not reflect this. and don't think for a minute that my post in any way discredits our service men and women or was intended to. we need not go about beating our chest proving whom is the bigger patriot, etc. Does anyone have a picture of the Mauler next to an Abrams or Bradley? I know the Walker Bulldog was designed to to be airliftable and fill this same roll in the 50's and 60's. Here is one of my favorite light armored vehicles: Meet the M50 Ontos |

I have a Mauler that is only missing the large antenna, and perhaps the tow cable. I can't remember for sure. It was one of the very few pieces I kept when I sold off my collection some 20 years or so ago. I always loved Heavy Metal too, although he spent most of his time inside the tank, of course.

England was 3wks away from surrender due to starvation when Hitler gave up and opened up the Russian front. Thank god for his impatience. If he would have conquered England first, we would have not had a foothold to retake Europe.
The Me-262 ran on diesel fuel and was not subject to the shortages according to 21st Century's description. That really surprised me. Also, Hitler kept changing his mind on the 262's mission, wanting a bomber instead of a fighter which delayed it by over a year. I the luftwaffe generals had gotten their jet fighter/interceptor a year earlier, things could have been very different. Hitler's scientists were close to the bomb, but Hitler did not see the importance of it and never expanded the project. The Panther was the ultimate tank and all modern designs are based on it's philosophy, but Hitler was obsessed with the Tiger. It seems odd to me that the US won the war using Russia's method of mass producing cheap tanks and overwhelming the Germans, yet now use the German model of expensive weapons that require lots of maintenance and cannot be fielded in great numbers. Obviously this works for 3rd world countries, but Russia or China might flood us. You can only kill as many tanks as you have ammo for. I do agree with other posts though about upgrading our existing M14s to meet the need for air transportable light armor. We have thousands of them just waiting to be put back in the fight. All told we built 85,000 M14s. Granted many of those were exports, but we still have large numbers in out inventory. Its really sad when egos and politics get in the way of us building the best armored force in the world!
