See, that’s why GI Joe toys were great back then because they used real military vehicles concepts for their ideas instead of making things up.

The article mentions a follow up vehicle. The RDF light tank. A local collector has one of those in his collections. Sort of a mini-mauler.

The American Military Industrial Complex is a massively bloated and incestuous beast. More often companies win contracts based on which senator's district is owed the biggest favor, rather than which system is actually best. How many of our people have died as a result of IEDs and landmines that Armored Hummers are utterly useless against? I read several stories in USA Today about a vehicle (called The Warthog or Razorback or something) that was not only vastly better armored than upgraded Hummers, but had a V-shaped armored undercarraige that gave soldiers a much better chance of surviving a roadside attack. The vehicles were only moderately more expensive than than hummers, but did our army bother buying any? Nope. They just ordered more armor kits for hummers that are utterly useless against anything bigger than an AK-47. I don't know what the sit is now, but I'd bet money that our fuel and supplies are still being escorted by hummers (which are just glorified jeeps rather than anything designed for actual open combat).

You're talking about the MRAPs. They're anti-mine vehicles originally developed in South Africa. A couple of reasons they're not more widely used
1. They're expensive. And most are much bigger than hummers. If you think of a hummer in scale with cars, these are more in scale with trucks. 2. Some designs have roll-over issues. Apparently because they're high and narrow they can get tipped. And on poor narrow roads like A-stan, that can be a probelm. especially if the shoulder is 500 feet below. Some pictures of various designs here. Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Armored Vehicles I always thought the MOBAT was an M60, because it had the 105mm maingun and IR spotlight. |

Ahh.. now I don't feel so bad when i see my poor Maulers being dwarfed by the Abrams.. they are not competitors for the throne of MBT anymore!
Can you find any more specs about this? Weight? Size? Etc. I'd love to work my Maulers into my Airborne teams correctly. I always thought the Mauler was one of the better looking Joe vehicles.. and it's awesome to see it was based on reality! armor: 2.95 inches Welded Aluminum (can use explosive reactive armor add ons, or steel aplique) Weight: 20.5 tons crew: 3 speed: 51.5 miles per hour maximum (very fast for a tracked vehicle) secondary gun: 7.62 machine gun main gun: 76mm Hypervelocity gun (range up to 7 miles!) This gun can pierce any enemy armor! Only allowed for use by US and NATO forces; this killed the export market for the vehicle. I really want Hasbro to remake the MAULER with a turret that can hold a third crew-member, and sport at least one machine gun! If they can remake the Skyhawk, Cobra Claw, and Water Moccasin from scratch, then they can make a new turret for the MAULER!!

Yeah, jets don't get a whole lot prettier than the MiG-29 and Su-31. My wife is from Peru and I keep hoping one day to be down there when they are flying their MiG-29s in an airshow. I'd love to see them flying live and in person.
I have a model of a Mig-29 that is probably 20 years old now, painted with tan, green and brown camo. I was fixing its front landing gear a couple nights ago, and man, she's as pretty now as the day I put her together. Ah, memories... I also have a desk model of a Peruvian MiG-29 (grey camo scheme) that my father-in-law gave me as a birthday present a few years back. Absolutely lovely in both schemes. All in all I will grant you that its pretty, but you need more than a pretty fighter to win! If you want to see a pretty fighter check out the F-CK-1B Ching Kuo fighter from Taiwan.

The Mig 29 is more or less a F16 meets F15 morphed together... The only real impressive capabilitry of the Mig 29 is look down shoot down radar, and the "top intake" for taking off of unprepaired runways. With a well trained pilot it could be a threat, but there isn't anybody flying Mig 29s with good training and brass balls. Over both Iraq wars Mig pilots ran away when picked up by F-14 Radar, that is documented.

Pretty is all that counts on the toy shelf. ;) Chicken-shit pilots aside. The Ching Kuo looks like little more than the spawning of an F-16 and an F-5, with a little F-18 thrown in. |

Yeah, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm afraid the only impression I get from it is Asian knockoff. Of course, I was never a huge fan of either the F-16 or the F-5. I was always more for the bigger, badder air superiority fighters. Give me an F-14, F-15, F/A-18E/F, MiG-29, Su-27 or an F-22 any day.

Iraqi's running away doesn't give an accurate measure of the craft's ability to fight. They ran away on the ground and in the skies because they didn't think their leader was worth dying for. Mig-29s are a cold war technology as well, and they have been continuously upgraded since then by Russia, albeit in low numbers, but they are formidable fighters. Munitions have vastly improved since that time too. For a better reading on how they perform, you may want to look at how the Indian Air Force fares with them.
