It is possible, but tricky. I started with removing the blue doors, then carefully flipped it over and placed it on a pillow to get at all of the screws for the crank. Unfortunately, the spring anchors are broken on both sides of mine, so that was not an issue, but I can imagine it being dicey to try popping the springs off without breaking it. The other thing to watch for is where the arms connect to the cradle, the tabs that keep them in their holes are not the strongest.
So, TLDR, it is possible, but be extremely careful! I ended up snapping the front-right wheel housing in the process. The pegs are still in the crawler unit and there doesn't appear to be any way of removing them (there's no hole to get at them from the top and I tried using a pair of pliers to yank them out to no avail). Having said that, anyone have brilliant ideas for re-attaching? Perhaps if I could find a glue strong enough I might be able to superglue it back in place, but that seems destined to fail on account of how much weight it will be expected to bear.

For the wheel housing, I made 4 holes, which was extremely tricky to get the holes to line up on both sides. Once all was lined up I super glued the pins to the larger part of the assembly. Once dry I used JB plastic bond on the surface of the broken part with the pegs sticking out and carefully put dabs of superglue on the tops of the brass pegs before putting the tab into place. Dry fit this multiple times before breaking out the glue, as there is no time for fixing errors when you start. A lot of work and extra steps, but you end up with a much stronger repair. The plastic bond works only on the plastic, hence the glue for the brass. I have used this technique to do a lot of repairs, and it has yet to fail me. The color of the plastic bond can be problematic (an off white, grayish) so keep that in mind if the repair is in a visible place. I also avoid being too sloppy with it to avoid too much squishing out when the pieces are pushed together. I had to do this for one of the track wheels that the gantry cradle rests on that snapped right at the wheel. It was a break that was impossible to fix with glue alone. I carefully used this method, and it can bear the full weight of the cradle in the upright position with no signs of failing. All than being said, I also strongly suggest putting something together so the weight of the thing does not rest on those wheels. I used some wood padded with an old t shirt to lift the whole thing and have it on a larger piece of wood for moving it.

I had two that were broken on mine, I was able to do some repairs, but they took some specialized tools. The ones listed here generally came from either a hobby shop that specialized in miniature gaming like Warhammer, shops that deal in model trains and airplanes, or booths at trade shows (car shows and gun shows usually) that deal in various smaller tools. I used forceps to pull the tabs out since they tend to be smaller than pliers and have better grip strength. I used a pin vice with an extremely small bit to make holes to fit pins clipped off of lengths of thin brass rod. I always use brass because it has the best mix of flex and rigidity for this purpose.

Dude, Naptime... that is a wealth of awesome information to have, and I appreciate you taking the time to detail the process for me.

What would you guys recommend for repairing a broken center fin? I was going to glue the tab back onto the fin and then try to reinsert. Would Loctite super glue do the trick or is there a better glue to use?

I just picked up a Defiant last weekend in Mississauga for $200 Canadian, about $140 US. It's in pretty good condition, nothing really broken but about 40% complete. The biggest things I am missing are the crank and the two rear panels for the crawler. The only other issues are the bottom of the center fin is broken off in the shuttle and there are two small cracks in the top of the gantry doors but I'm pretty happy with it. I've already started finding some of the missing parts.

Nice! Though a pristine fresh-from-the-box one would be nice, there is also something to be said for restoring one. Mine was 85%ish and now I am only missing the umbilical cord (and no way in heck am I spending 100 bucks for a piece of plastic coated copper that I can get at Lowes for a fraction of that)
Good luck and enjoy the hunt!
