Despite all that, it still looks kickass, right?

No despite about it. She is awesome, but I have to do a full tear down to clean it up. The gantry is my biggest worry and is the aspect I looked over the least before buying. The Booster and Crusader checked out and once I saw Payload and Hardtop were complete I knew I was walking out with her
My first priority is cleaning it, then getting some foam bricks under it for support. The door is rough looking and it looks like someone tried to do a half assed glue repair, Im going to take a wack at it with some plastic weld before I give up and try to replace it entirely. The crank is just rattling around inside and I need to get in there to see if it can be repaired. There was a ziploc baggie with 2 broken gantry tabs, a piece of the door, and a curved metal piece I'm assuming they are parts from the crank assembly. The only other issue is the broken airlock door and gantry turret, but I feel pretty good about ferreting those out eventually. I cant keep from looking at this thing. The details are ridiculous. It's going to be a long wait for Summer to come and I can start to get this beauty back to it's rightful colors and not all yellowed. I may not be able to wait to get my Star Brigade troops deployed on her though. |

I wish I got to own one as a kid I can only imagine the time I would have spent playing with it. I seriously don't think I would have left the house. I like you bought it with some issues and restored it over time. Mine also has a busted tab on the air lock, but I just can't bring myself to spend the cash that people think it's worth. Both my doors have also been replaced. The only part I am missing is an original center tail wing for the shuttle.

I like piecing things together and bringing them back. It feels a little more "adult" to say I collect and restore old toys. If I had this Beast when I was a kid I would have never left the house for sure. Any one of the main parts is an excellent toy on it's own right. I am surprised the booster never got an individual release to go with the Crusader. A blacked out booster with the single release Crusader would look amazing. I've mostly focused on the booster as the gantry is sitting out in the garage waiting to get hosed down.(multiple mouse turds were found as I was loading it up)

Looking at buying a complete shuttle and booster, and picking up the gantry later. Is it hard to source or put together a full gantry on its own, or am I just better off buying one that is as complete as possible?

I saw a nearly complete defiant on eBay recently for 1500. I got a shell of it from a pawn shop a few years ago but it would take way too much money to buy the parts separately.

I've always said go complete with everything. it costs way too much in both time and $ to chase down parts later.
