1991 was my last year. I seen that ice cream soldier and knew it was the end of the line.

My last year to buy was 91, but I think I picked up a fig or two in 92. However, May 28, 1993 my childhood best friend and I went to Wal mart and both bought five Joes, went home and took out our old Joes and had one final childhood battle for good times sake, later that evening we watched the kids from 90210 graduate and then we went to our own graduation from high school that night. That day was a glorious adventure of our childhood and saying good bye to our Joes. A few years ago he sent me a box in the mail, it was full of his childhood joes. They had just been packed away and in the same box we put them in that afternoon. |

1994 was my last year that i lost interest in ARAH especially after the comic ended. that was a rough year and my junior year of High School. Enlisted the first time in the Army DEP during that year too.

For me it was about 86'. My favorite line was 84' since it gave us Storm Shadow, Firefly, Zartan and Baroness, and 85' was my peak, where I pretty much bought it all.
In 86' I went into 7th grade, and back then, you didn't buy toys in Junior High (even though a few of us continued to buy some in secret lol). It sucks because I really wanted to buy Crystal Ball, the new Viper, BAT, and a few others, but had to "lay low" and act like I enjoyed football lol. I wasn't a huge fan of the animated movie (just the fantastic intro), and Sgt. Slaughter, Serpentor and Dr. Mindbender kind of killed it for me. But some of my favorite characters did come later (Slice and Dice, Alley Viper, Night Viper, Night Creeper, Crystal Ball, Hydro-Viper, 2nd Storm Shadow, Iron Grenadier and TARGAT). I remember buying urban camo Storm Shadow, Alley Viper, TARGAT, Recoil, Beachhead and a few others in the years that followed, and when I was in 12th grade I really wanted Slice, but never jumped. A few years later I was in the Army and going to college when TRU started putting out the repainted figures, so I started buying a few of those. Didn't get much into VvV or Sigma, but jumped back in with both feet when the 25th line hit. Once I had my son I started buying some vintage figures MOC. Well, my Baroness is a recard, but a damn good one! Also got a few of them as Funskools, which is much, much cheaper. Put them in a Star Case and they look pretty good! |

I came back them as an adult, partly because of nostalgia and partly because I could get the one now that I couldn't get then. Once I started to amass quite a collection, I realized how inferior the ARAH line is compared to the modern era figures. The vehicles will alway remain in my collection from the ARAH era, but I have since sold off the majority of my ARAH o-ring figures and replaced them with the modern versions. I will always have a place in my heart for the ARAH figures but the fact is, they degrade, fall apart and are not displayable due to both of these facts. Whats the point of a collection if you can't display it, touch it see it. So for me, I started to lose interest in 89..then again in 2015...I guess it's just the way things go.

1991 was the last year I got a large number of the figures (not much in the way of vehicles, though). I was getting older and much of my toy collecting attention was being absorbed by the shiny new Toy Biz X-Men figures and McFarlane's early Spawn figures, etc...
I didn't ever completely stop buying, though...I grabbed onesies and twosies here and there every year afterward, including Sgt. Savage (but not Extreme) and then started getting back into things more heavily with the TRU exclusives in the late 90's. |

ok.
So I think a lot of factors were in play were. I was in on the line in 82 and in fact remember my mom reading me a TV Guide story about the small joes coming out " Next year" or something. I had always played with my uncles and cousins big joes and was super excited they would be the size of my Star wars/ BSG/ Buck Rogers/ Fisher price people. Everyone is telling when it went bad I want to make a note that I feel like the entire best moment in the entire line was when you had everything you were going to get from 84, got the catalogue for 85 and the Cartoon was gearing up in full swing. It was a moment of jut LIVING Gi Joes watching the show, playing with toys looking at all the cool new stuff, camping and playing real life Joes in the woods with friends, I even kept the morse code page and the field guids from the early stuff had a satchel with all the last few years inserts and mail away papers and basically anything with Gi Joe on it *5 and 86 were the high point of the run with the entire country being into it, people at school who weren't before were suddenly interested in our hobby. But that just meant they were paying attention when 7th, 8th grade rolled around and it was time 6to move on to Guns and Roses, Camaros, fingerbanging, football and Ibanez guitars with the action layed down reaaaaal low on em. I remember U@ I cant liver with or withoput you playing when my Mom had be box my stuff up because it was taking up to much space and my room was to small for all of it between 7th and 8th grade that summer (87) But I knew it was coming a little before then. I stayed home sick one day in the first months of 87 and picked up a small vehicle at Krogers while filling a script, I think it was the swamp masher. I was running a fever and wasn't sure what I was looking at in the insert was real that day... marine dress Gung Ho!?!? A Space Station!?!? Crytsal Ball, Raptor, Fast Draw... it all looked so crazy and out of synch with what we had been doing. But I never really gave up see I had an out, a brother 4 years younger than me. I would get him Joes for every Birthday or whatever just to keep them coming around the house and there are a few gems in each year as we all know. I made sure " he" got the new versions of RnR Stalker, Snake Eyes and so on.... I didn't get anything for myself from the 88 set. Following my example though he got out of them by about 90 as most of the post 90 stuff I have n0 connection to. BUT At some point I realized I had walked away frokm something that was making me happy for external pressure reasons and just reflexed back out fo that and started trying to put together a collection, I picked up 94 Shipwreck and firefly in college and started amassing a little figure stash so that by the time the 97 stuff came out I was back getting everything, rounding up the 80s stuff. I even played in a band whos official after practice activity was pitching in on a HUGE yuge joe collection of army builders and vehicles and everything but unfortunately the bank took everything when Mom died of cancer. I spent about a decade after that staying away from Joes but when POC/ 30 came out my current wife knew I was interested and p9icked my up a Haz viper and from there I have built a third nicest yet collection, So to TLDR the greatest moment in Joe was between84 and 85, I cherry picked 87 and was out by 88, stayed in tune till about 90, picked back up completely by 97 was OUT again completely in 2001 then back in in full for about 2012 or so.

I agree about 84-85, just looking at a Sears Wish Book from those years sums it all up. What's funny is that I remember the cartoon running for much longer, but I think it's because I had Revenge of Cobra and MASS Device on VHS, and must have watched the hell out of them until Pyramid of Darkness and the regular seasons started.
I have a strong sentimental attachment to Revenge of Cobra - it's still my favorite of all the mini-series, and has the best intro and animation (well, except for the 86' movie) |

For me the line never really ended as I have also kept interested in it. I remember not being to fond of the neon colors of the early 90s but still found figures that I did like and bought those. I remember the marvel issues really getting heavy into the ninjas and still I kept reading them. I even watched the Dic show regularly although I wasn't to fond of that eihther. It wasn't until GI joe extreme launched that I no longer checked the toy aisle regularly & I think I began to focus my attention towards the Toybiz Marvel lines like xmen and spiderman by this time. But I have consistently hit yard sales and flea markets since I was old enough to carry a figure. My father brought me out every weekend until I was able to drive myself and now I do the same with my son. We even dvr the Sunbow series daily, even tho we own the box set. Something about it just being on TV brings back the kid in me. Especially since they play joe and TF back to back. I remember when the tru exclusive line hit in the late 90s and this again rekindled the flame. I continued buying those and the classic collection when that launched. I again lost some interested when the figures swapped from oring to that wierd nee scuplt just prior to VvsV and spytroops. Until 2007 when the 25th dropped and its been steady since.

It's funny you say that, because I own all the DVDs but still have the MASS Device, Revenge of Cobra, Pyramid of Darkness and Arise, Serpentor episodes on DVR, just to watch or have on in the background when I'm on the computer.
