I think it was 1988 when the figures colors and vehicles started to become cheesy and ridiculous. I was also entering high school and felt I had to leave action figures behind me.

For me it was 1987. I loved Falcon and Tunnel Rat....Croc Master and Raptor....the Renegades...but Cobra La (even though I really liked the movie) just spun me out. I always had played with my Joes outside in realistic environments, but with the Cobra La thing (even though I had them and they are cool figs to this day), it just spiraled into science fiction type neon color madness. I realize though that there wasn't a whole lot they could keep re-hashing to stay realistic, but it just got rediculous to me.

1989, not necessarily out of choice, but because my family was going thru serious financial hardships at the time. I still managed to pick up at least a few '89 offerings--Alley Viper, Heat Viper, Arctic Stalker, Snake Eyes, etc.
From that point on, I moved onto other things like sports, smoking, beer, and girls. I do remember catching glimpses of the 1990 figures on an impulse rack in a Wal-Mart and thinking they looked cool--specifically Bullhorn, Ambush, Sub-Zero, Stretcher, Rock Viper, SAW Viper, and Night Creeper, mainly for the accessories. Never got back into it though. Years later, my old man and I were poking thru a KB toys in the mall and we saw the neon colored Battle Corps figures, translucent Ninja Force figures, and something called Sgt. Savage. My dad commented that GI Joe had finally "lost it". Had I still been collecting, this would probably be the point where I would've said forget it--early to mid nineties. However a couple of years later, I would be buying some of those Toys R Us exclusives. Last edited by GiftedAmateur; 05-13-2013 at 06:48 PM.. |

As a great fantasy writer has said many times in the past, for me at least, "It Never Ends".

ARAH never ended for me. The very last figure I bought was SHIPWRECK (v2), YOJOE.COM | YoJoe.com: Dedicated to the G.I.Joe of the 80's, 90's and beyond! actually that was the only figure I bought in 1994. I stopped being a completest in 1987. That was the last year I bought every single carded figure. The last vehicle I purchased was the Phantom X-19 Stealth Fighter.

I "peaked" in my Joe interest in 1989, and aside from getting Overlord in 1990, almost all of my purchases were biased around characters I liked, or lacked because of what was featured in the cartoons (while I saw Operation Dragonfire "first run", I didn't see any other DiC stuff until 1993-ish when USA Network was running them). In 1990, I got Overlord, the Laser Viper and Sonic Fighters Viper and Falcon. Followed by the Talking Commanders Cobra Commander (my first CC), and my last run of Joe figures was 92 Duke, Destro and a 91 BAT. The Joseph Colton Mailaway basically capped my classic Joe acquisitions, and by 1995 I was transitioning out of toys completely. But as I said, NONE of the Joe concepts struck me as being "stupid" (and maybe that was because I was still young enough to appreciate them as toys), and several were highly desirable to me (like the Eco Force Flint) because they were offering characters I viewed "integral" because of my exposure to the brand via the cartoons.

Agreed. 1990 was awesome, and had some great figures with the best accessories of the 82-94 run. 1991 on the other hand... well, it got really colorful and really spring loaded.
