It was '87 for me.
The perfect storm of the line "jumping the shark" (imo), sports, heavy metal and girls pretty much ended my run with G.I.Joe, which started at the beginning in '82. 1985 was really when I think the line was hitting its stride and really going to a higher level, but started to decline after that, though '86 was really good too, there were signs that things were starting to go the wrong way, at least for what my vision of it was. |

I never minded the science fiction elements as a kid (except Cobra-La) so I liked GI Joe right to the end, though I didn't like Star Brigade, Mega Marines or Ninja Force much. How many realistic tanks, jets and jeeps can you make before everything looks kind of samey?

I liked GI Joe decently enough from the mid-80s until the early 90s, but the neon, more outlandish stuff of 91 and 92 was my favorite time period and where I got the most toys as a kid. In fact, my wife just got me a couple volumes of the comics from that time period and I'm loving them haha!
I guess '93 went too far for me, because I dropped out almost completely then (maybe I was just getting "too old" for toys--if I only knew!).

I to this day have very little intrest in the green guys from 82 & 83. 84 is where it starts getting interesting and then has it's highlights in 85 & 86.
87 is where I began being turned off by mostly the new bad guys and battle force 2000. 88 had a handfull of cool guys, but I another thing that bothered me - weapons in completely unrealistic colors. Storm shadow, Budo & Iron grenadiers were all nice figures...but they came with 2 bright red swords and a bright red laser gun? Fuck that. And the bad guys were again less then OK. I liked tiger force though. By 89, I can't even name most of the figures, so by then I had lost interest. Rock & roll is OK, I guess - but he's more of an exception to how I feel about them. |

'92 for me. I was in middle school, the girls were showing interest in me, and I returned the favor.
As an adult looking back, '87 was when the lame designs started outnumbering the cool ones. |

In 1989 we saw some more normal Joes like Downtown, Rock'N'Roll, Stalker, Alley Viper, and a decent Snake Eyes, if you don't want to count the re-releases in Night Force. 1989-91 were pretty much the last peak until the end. |

Really thought this inspired Repeater but as it turns out, they both got released in '88.

Didn't like how everyone was turned into ninjas in the 90's, got into Jurassic Park then returned to GIJoe for the BF line because of the realism.
Internet wasn't in our home yet but I knew GIJoe was over when I only found Star Brigade's line in the discount outlet, moved onto Star Wars, superheroes, etc |

And the more GIJoe went futuristic, the more I couldn't relate until I stopped collecting around '91. The last GIJoe I bought was Tracker, for the raft.
