For me it was after 1989. I had more Joe's and vehicles from the'89 line than any other year, but I was moving to junior high. Video games and girls were more important. Plus seeing some of the vehicles my brother acquired ('92s Earthquake - YIKES!) reaffirmed my decision to stop collecting.

My dates and releases years are a bit askew...
Maybe here in Canada we got things later? or things lasted on toy shelves longer... Point is, I got all my Joes much later than they were released I've learned going through the archives on YoJoe/3D Joes. For example I got the The DEMON, X-Wing Chopper, Blizzard and Hydro-Viper for Xmas 1990, and the Razorback, Mudfighter, TARGAT and HEAT Viper for Xmas 1991. EDIT... Maybe 1992... cause there was also a Christmas with the Tiger Shark, Python Viper, and Gnawgahyde... I stopped collecting in 1991/1992. I was in grade 5. It was a combination of the line itself, and my own maturing I'm sure. I had gotten more into TMNT starting in 1990, so birthdays/christmas always meant more new TMNT toys than GI Joes. And, moreso, I would prefer my old Joes to what I was getting. by 90/91 I was getting these Iron Grenadiers sci-fi vehicles... the Mudfighter I think is an abomination... And if I wanted to get the old Joes I was missing... I had to get them in ridiculous new Tiger Force or Slaughter Marauders paintjobs!!! Maybe if I was still 8 and not 11, the paint jobs would have appealed to me... I did always like Lifeline, Blowtorch and Sci-Fi! So we'll never know! Plus then as a teenager browsing toys occasionally as 'decorative items' ;) I couldn't believe what GI Joes had become... cool they all come with battle stands... cause they need em... I have always always always hated spring launched weapons... put em on a big vehicle the size of the Skystriker if you want, but certainly not in a 3.75" figures hands!!! Spin that clock like mad and we're in 2007 and the 25th anniversary line is slowly dribbled out here in Canada... I buy some, I get inspired (yet again) to maybe start re-collecting my old Joes, but I said nope!, Between Star Wars, Marvel Super Heroes, Green Army Men and TMNT I don't need to collect any more toys!!!... It took 10 more years to get there! Anyone looking for Star Wars or TMNT toys? Last edited by Pumphrey; 07-04-2017 at 06:20 PM.. |

For me 1992 was my last year. Although by the middle of 1990 nearly all my friends and classmates had stopped getting toys. There was a handful of hold outs and we'd keep each other up on what Joes were at which stores.
I remember seeing a commercial on TV for the Sgt Savage P-40, I thought how cool, a Joe scaled P-40 Warhawk! I had built several models of the Flying Tiger's P-40's as a kid and I was so tempted to try to find the Sgt Savage one. But I was playing football in high school by then, I was entirely too embarrassed to be caught buying toys then lol. After Christmas of 1991 Joe stock at the local stores dried up pretty quick. We only got about half of the 1992 line, and I had everything that was in the local stores then. I remember wanting the new Joe HQ and the Toxo Lab so bad, but they were never available here. By the time school let out in June I had given up on GIJoe, nothing new in stores and just me getting older and moving on to new things and of course at that age getting interested in girls. Some day I'd love to find out why there was such a shortage of Joes in 1992, atleast around here. I remember checking all the local stores, TRU, K-Mart, Hill's, Kay-Bee, Harts, Sears, JC Penny. It was kinda funny, I was up old enough I was doing alot of yard work and stuff for people so I had a bunch of money burning a hole in my pocket and no Joes to buy. I ended up spending it all on video games. Ironically it's kinda like today. I have money and there aren't any Joes at the local stores to buy. Thanks Hasbro. |

i'll join the "1992 was the end" club. color, design, and distro of figures and vehicles all took a nosedive.
i think the Battle Wagon (awesome, despite neon) and septic tank (nifty niche, but meh) in early 1992 were among the last things i got. i wanted the new firefly but never saw him at retail. - |

87 was the end of the line for me. I was getting too old for toys and Joe's were starting to be ridiculously painted with ridiculous vehicles

1993: Mega Marines and Star Brigade were too strange for me.
The last figures I bought at retail were Battle Corps Cobra Cmdr and CG Cmdr, until 2000 when I bought the CC/Chameleon and SE/SS packs

Just to play devils advocate for a second. While many of us draw the line at Ninja Force, Mega Marines and Star Brigade, my 8 year old cannot get enough of those guys. The more Sci Fi and gimmicky the better. Just saying Hasbro may not have been too far off with the direction of the line.

Kirk Bozigian has said that '93 was the second best selling year for the line. The problem it seems, is most of us who were collecting earlier didn't like it but we were growing up and it probably didn't matter what they did with the line anyway. I never stopped collecting, so it bother me too much, I was 13 in '94.
It seems to me toy companies have trouble with realigning their target audience. Lack of a TV show stopped any new customers and the original collectors moved on. Last edited by redraptor; 08-22-2017 at 02:11 PM.. |

It was '87 for me.
The perfect storm of the line "jumping the shark" (imo), sports, heavy metal and girls pretty much ended my run with G.I.Joe, which started at the beginning in '82. 1985 was really when I think the line was hitting its stride and really going to a higher level, but started to decline after that, though '86 was really good too, there were signs that things were starting to go the wrong way, at least for what my vision of it was. |
