Here is a question I had for awhile and this is good as any place to ask I guess.
Has anyone ever had any problems with the plastic of vintage Star Wars figures? It seems they were made of a different softer plastic maybe? I don't ever see broken thumbs outside of dog chewings or some such.

The biggest danger is in getting the weapons secured and posing the figure. It's fun, just go slow, and if you feel too much resistance, maybe rethink your pose or putting that weapon in that hand.
I've forced a lot of weapons into hands while building 3DJoes, and not broken any thumbs. I'd say the trick is to make sure the thumb is reinforced by a fingernail or something from the opposite side of where you are inserting the handle. Hope you can picture what I mean. Personally, I wouldn't risk it with some of my figures, though. You might not have broken any thumbs while doing that, but in most of my cases, I didn't either: 1. Tripwire's heel just came off while displayed on a stand. 2. Ditto Spirit's thumb... well, it didn't come all the way off actually, but it was well on its way. It seemed fine when I put the gun in. 3. Both Footloose and Outback's straps broke this way too. None of these incidents occurred WHILE posing them. In fact, for all I know, they happened months or even a few years after the fact. I think Duke's heel was the only exception (that happened right away - my early days of collecting, lol). So yeah, watch out for this. Probably fine if you just geared them up, took your pics, then put them away in storage again, but if you keep them posed on your shelves (like most of us, I assume), the constant pressure is a risk. Not for most, probably, but certainly some of them. I love your site, btw! Quote:

I don't ever see broken thumbs outside of dog chewings or some such. One particularly good example is Teebo. For some reason, Kenner made the handle of his weapon quite thick. If you want him to hold it, you have to widen the grip considerably, but I haven't heard of any thumbs breaking. There are a few examples of specific issues, though. EV-9D9's limbs are particularly prone to breaking. 8D8 too, maybe, but he's way easier to obtain/cheaper, so no biggie I guess.

Wow guys! Thanks a lot for all the information. Very very useful!
Nice of you to take some time to specify some things. I'll take care of creating a comfortable 'climate' first! It is a very dry but sometimes, very warm, floor. |

I just got a vintage ARAH Airtight and while posing him for a picture next to his 30th counterpart, I suddenly remembered this thread and got scared to even try to put his gun in his hand, haha. I was even leery about putting the air hose on his head.
