In my experience, hands on the straight-arm figures break easy. The one time in my life I used a stand I broke a heel, so I don't recommend foot pegs.
Other than that I don't have any problems and I use my figures all the time. |

HA- I had this happen with a vintage Bullhorn recently! I'd been out of the vintage Joes collecting game for years, so hadn't really had many figures posed around on stands, but after purchasing Bullhorn recently both of his heels exploded! Talked to a few other collectors and they blamed it on the heat of AZ drying out the plastic, but apparently it's not limited to my state. Just plastic growing brittle over time it seems.

Like I said, it only ever happened with Duke and Tripwire for me, but if you look at how they were sculpted, the heel on the boot was very distinct... I'm not really sure how to best describe it, but after it happened, it looked like it might have been a combination of plastic getting more brittle over time, and the way the heel was sculpted. I dunno. Like I said, it only ever happened to me with those figures.

i think a wide variety in temperature can lead to the plastic becoming more brittle and chance of 'sploding. like was mentioned before, if you are storing them in the attic, make sure the temperature is ok up there or that will be your biggest problem.
i haven't used marauders stands, but when i use small joes stands i just barely slide them on and don't push them down at all.

also parts like the hoses on the eel, the mask hose on fast draw or croc master can be damaged easily. you might want to avoid displaying with those pieces entirely.

It's like everybody said, if it fits do it, if not, find a way around it. I don't put expensive weapons geared up. For example, i have heavy metals gun hanging on the turret of the mauler, rampage and rumbler hold the gun by the strap and it's just hanging with an under-turned hand. Stardusters helmet wasn't fitting easily so those are just sitting next to the 2 versions.

It was V1 Spirit. He's wearing plain boots, I didn't notice anything that would suggest his heel would be any more or less fragile than another figure.

another consideration would be to replace o-rings before displaying.
old o rings may snap and break and throw your figure across the room or worse, into nearby bystanders causing collateral damage.

Of 'sploding heels, I can concur that Duke and Zartan are prone to these mishaps. Of broken crotches, again, Duke and Tripwire are vulnerable, as are most figures if abused. I would add Monkeywrench based on experience.
I wouldn't pose any straight arm figures holding weapons. Assuming they still have thumbs in the first place. I've never had issues with o-rings 'sploding. They just topple over, if anything. Most of the time, I've picked them up and only had the torso is how I found out. |

I've had my 1982-1987 Joes on display for ~4 years now and none have broken. I've even moved the case 3 times (apartment/house/apartment).
The one thing that has broken was outback's machine gun strap. So, I'd second the recommendation above to use "order arms" poses for guns with straps. "Footloose's M-16 strap (and others). I've had one of these break simply because it was shouldered. I didn't think there was any pressure on it, but apparently there was... just something to watch out for. This happened to my Outback as well." The biggest danger is in getting the weapons secured and posing the figure. It's fun, just go slow, and if you feel too much resistance, maybe rethink your pose or putting that weapon in that hand. I've forced a lot of weapons into hands while building 3DJoes, and not broken any thumbs. I'd say the trick is to make sure the thumb is reinforced by a fingernail or something from the opposite side of where you are inserting the handle. Hope you can picture what I mean. Good luck and have fun! |
