I recently moved all my Joes from my moms to my new home. After going through it all and organizing it I found out that the light bar on my 1990 General does not work. All the sounds work though just not the lights. Anyone here experience this and know how to fix?

If i am not mistaken the lights and sound might be "tied" into a box that is where all the electronic stuff is. I beleive this box is removable, hence replaceable, and can easily be taken out. Perhaps this is even the battery box, not sure.
This is all off the top of my head right now at around 10 o clock and all my Joe stuff is in my showroom, but thats my garage, and i am not making my way in there tonight. But my point is that i have a complete, working General in there, and an incomplete General for parts in my showroom aswell. Tomorow i will double check the "electronics" for you, when i get a chance. If i find that fixing it is just an electronic box replacement the other good news is that i think i have a working one in my incomplete "parts" General. If i can figure out if this, or even something else i have, will fix your problem, i would be very willing to cheaply sell you or trade you what you need. Again, let me check my Generals tomorow and i hope i can help you with your problem. We can start there my friend. |

The slide switch usually is the culprit. The right two batteries only power the lights. The lights will work independent of each other. If you can't solder, BE CAREFUL if you open it up, the short/brittle wiring tends to break the soldering points. It you can find a nice working unit for cheap it may more worthwhile. If you run into issues or need more help drop me a msg.

The lights not working is a very common problem in the General.

And after 20+ years I'm not surprised! Haha. I have 3 generals and lights dont work on any, but the sound does.

Love the General!!!!!!!
Have 2 of them and I am trying to get the 2nd ones sound and light box working. Looks like the batteries have been left in since 1990. :( They can be repaired but like Tolan said the wires are very small and will just break off if you are not careful. Ill try to post a few pictures of mine tomorrow. |

If this is the case, I would just get some new bulbs and solder them in place of the old ones. I have done it on a few for myself and others it isn't too difficult and looks great once finished.

I need to replace the bulbs in mine too. The sounds seem fine though.
