So I'm looking to get this, but can't really tell from pictures if the gold head is still in good shape. They look like a mix of gold and silver. Many look like they're faded. Is this common?
Yes.
Loose ones generally have a faded head. I've never compared to a boxed one. As long as its not scratched, and has some gold tone to it, you probably wont find better lose.
