This is a pointless thread but I feel like sharing so read on and if you were a kid or collector in the 80's you can probably relate.
For me growing up as a kid in the 80's collecting Gi Joes, was great. Except that I missed out on ever getting to own certain items like the U.S.S Flagg, The Defiant, or the big ass Command Center thing, etc... I probably could have ordered them through a Gi Joe catelog or something, but the resources wasn't like they are today. And I was a kid so my parents wouldn't go that extra mile too get me a hard to find toy. It was get what was on the shelf or nothing at all... It's great to be able to type a few keys and get to buy things that were made 20 years ago, or that are in a different country. Things that 20 years ago were almost impossible to get if you didn't get it when it was on the shelf. I'm glad to finally announce to myself, cause I'm sure no one else cares, lol But after 20 years I finally own my first Night Raven! Also to add I recently got my second Tomahawk, Thunder Machine and cobra ferret. All items I used to own as a kid, but lost somewhere along the way of growing up. But I got them back into my collection. Man do I wish I had the Night Raven with my collection as a kid when I played with them. This jet is an amazing piece of well crafted plastic. I always remember looking at the catalog thing that came with the toys inside the boxes, and seeing some of the older things you couldn't buy in stores anymore. I always wished my parents would order particular ones, but yeah I never got them. :( Anyways here is a few pics of the stuff I got. Hope you enjoy. Last edited by SniperX; 10-16-2009 at 06:03 AM.. |

Congrats on the Night Raven. I didn't own it until I was an adult and collecting for years. Then I got addicted to them and had to scale down. I still own my first one and freakin still love it as if I got it yesterday. By far the best item in the cobra or joe air force

I feel the exact opposite. When I was a kid, I feel I appreciated stuff more, because when you did come across something you'd been wanting and waiting and hoping for, you appreciated it so much more. I remember being the first kid at school to get Zartan and the Chameleon Swamp Skier. And later, as I really got into music, I had to hunt down and buy all of a band's singles or even resort to buying bootlegs to have copies of all of their more rare songs - now you can just go onto any site and find this information and go to another to buy or download. I think instant gratification really lessens the value of things you would otherwise have to work for. But that's just me, being old-timey and stuff, missing the days when you bought stuff out of catalogs, and had to wait 4-6 weeks for arrival. Now I click on something online, and it's at my door in 2 days. I just feel that something isn't right about that...

Sniper X, that's a nice looking night raven. I've salivated over it as a child, but not as much as land/water based vehicles like the snow cat and hydrofoil. anyway, i picked up those babies like-new on ebay and quenched my childhood hunger (I feel like unicron after feasting on a cyberplanet). My new taste is now set on Elite Force. SOOOo, it's a great thing that there is limited access to BBI / Elite Force figures, because now that I have a car I can periodically visit the local TRUs in search of that stealthy delta force or navy seal paratrooper!

and since there were more than enough to go around, you could pass on that guy you were on the fence about, and get a figure you think youd like better...but youd go back next week and get the other guy! now lets be honest here, why is this hobby so frustrating and somewhat diffucult? internet......ebay specifically. be happy the internet wasnt around in the 80s....kept it fun for when we were kids. |

I don't even think there were toy scalpers back then, at least, not like today. Only when it came to stuff like Cabbage Patch Kids, and even up to the Tickle Me Elmo, most stores still weren't online yet. I miss an entire aisle devoted to Joe, or maybe split up between Transformers and something like He-Man. Those were the big three back in the day (though I never much cared for He-Man). But, then again, with a lot of the older stuff, it's not too readily available on eBay or second-hand sites - you do have to do regular searches, and know your subject matter. Occasionally, you come across some great finds, which do make it seem worthwhile in the end. Back then, when something was out of production, that was it. There was virtually no chance of getting your hands on it - until the internet made it possible. So, it's a double-edged sword. The true question is - do you play with it as devotedly as you did (or would have) when you were a kid?

I agree. For me GIJOE always had a disconnect between the toys and the cartoon. I loved the cartoon...the old sunbow one. I watched it in rerun in the late 80's and early 90's on the USA cartoon express. However the gijoe toys I had were not the same. My snake eyes was the 89 one and didnt look anything like the cartoon. Guys like quick kick couldnt be found. When I finally got a shipwreck he was a scuba diver not a sailer and I had crappy broken thumbs slaughters marauders of greats like spirit and mutt. The worst offense...my only stormshadow was ninja force......and a joe. I did find some good stuff at yard sales though and ended up with quite a few scrap irons that I somehow thought were televipers.

Now I never was able to army build mind you but I had at least one figure of every figure made from 83-89. I was missing a few of the original 82 figures and there were a few things I never managed to get like the original Headquarters, which my friend had. But all in all the 80's were good for me and the area I lived in got most of the Joe's pretty easily. I do remember going on the hunt all the time and how I would try and hide things until I could come back and buy them. I also used Layaway a lot. I was an only child too so that helped. But I LOVED the 80's I only wish I still had my collection as an adult, when I was 18 I decided I was "Grown UP" and got rid of everything for a dirt cheap price. I even had the Mobile Command Center and the Defiant, but I never had the Terror Drome or the Flagg. I did have the Night Raven though and it was one of my all time favorites. I bet that got about the most play value out of any of my vehicles. The 80's were a great time to be a kid, that's for sure.
