Hi! I was hoping maybe someone here could give me some answers about a figure I have.
I have a mail-away Major Bludd figure that I got a while back that is still in the clear plastic baggie. It comes with the backpack, gun, and red-back filecard. YOJOE.COM | Major Bludd This file card has the "Uzi" poem, but the copyright date is 1983. Do you think this is one of the unadvertised mail aways? Or one of the later edition mail aways? Thanks for the help!! Last edited by NSA; 02-26-2009 at 04:08 AM.. |

I remember sending away for many of the mail-away figures using battle points. Most of the time they would offer vehicles without the drivers. One time they offered a few figures from 1983 with a collector's case. Major Bludd was one of them along with Airborne, Doc, Flash, Grunt, Short-Fuze, Rock N' Roll, Zap, a Cobra Officer and the hooded Cobra Commander. Please don't qoute me on this line up because I'm at work right now and can only go by memory.
I don't remember if the cards had the red backs or the plain cardboard backs though. In any case Hasbro offered Major Bludd, in the US and Canada, as a mail-away figure in a baggie with the red backed file card for many years. EDIT: According to yojoe.com com it seems as if you could have one of the three mail-away versions... 1- Major Bludd was first available as a special unadvertised mail-in offer in late 1982/early 1983. 2- 1986 and 1987, Hasbro Direct offered Major Bludd as part of the "Original Adventure Team" mail-in set. He came packaged in a plastic bag and came with nine other figures in a carrying case. 3- In 1989, Major Bludd was available by himself through Hasbro Direct. I had mentioned #2 and #3 above in my post. I didn't know about the #1 mail-away even before the figure was ever released on card. That is the version you might have because you have the "Uzi" poem file card which is the first version of the card. I'm just not sure if the first mail-away version had a red backed file card or not. I know that the red backed file cards came with the 3rd mail-away from Hasbro Direct in 1989, but I'm not sure if they were still using the "Uzi" poem by that time. EDIT #2: I already see that you know all of this information and you are still confused. I will go home and check the file card that I have which came with the "Original Adventure Team" mail-away offer. If I have a different file card than you have then I guess we can rule out one mail-away version.

Thank you.. yeah I checked yojoe, and I figure its either the "unannounced release version", but if it went 82-early 83 why would there be a 1983 copyright on it? Or its from the combo set you were talking about.. but then it shouldn't have the "UZI" poem.. as it seems that would be a "later" filecard.. but maybe not..
Haha thanks for checking That'll rule out one of them hopefully! |

I just checked my file card and I have the same one as you do. It has the red back and the "Uzi" poem on it. I received this Major Bludd as part of "Original Adventure Team" mail-in set. I hope this helps.

Facts and Information:
Major Bludd was first released as a mail-in figure and later found a retail release. The mail-in figure does not differ at all from the retail version. In 1983 JC Penny released a 3-pack of Cobra figures (listed as "G.I. Joe Three Figure Set" in their 1983 catalog) which included: Cobra Commander, Destro and and Major Bludd. All of these figures came with their original accessories and a red backed filecard with a flag point on it. (The catalog ID# is XU 655-3960 A.) There remains speculation about this version of Major Bludd. It remains unclear if the right arm of this figure (which lacks normal G.I. Joe articulation) was designed as a robotic/ prosthetic arm or if it's supposed to be an armored sleeve to protect the arm from the exhaust blast then the guns rockets fire. |
