just curious how many kids or collectors read or care about background on filecards?
the reason i ask is because in gi joe guide they talk more about the story than they do the toy(variants, accessories, etc) and that always bothered me |

I don't most of the collectors here care a lot about the filecards. Here's a link to a very long thread about it.

I find the information in the filecards essential, personally.
Even as a kid I used that info to influence how I played.

I think that the current total of 18258 posts (1826 pages) in the What secrets lurk in the filecards? thread speaks for itself. At least some of us care

They're pretty important if you care about the characters. Otherwise, you could make them up however you like - which really wouldn't be GI Joe/Cobra.

It's the story that drew me to Joe, it's the story that keeps me.
The filecards are the history of the brand, just as much as figure construction and variations. History should be important to collector. |

The filecards add flavour, depth and much needed characterization to the figures. Without it one would simply have a toy with a code name.

I don't know which guide the OP is specifically referencing, but if its Bellomo's guide, I think he does a good job providing both. One of my favorite parts to the guide is when he lists prototype codenames. I would love to see a future edition include more historical information such as Mutt originally planned as a Cobra, or whether or not Downtown was really supposed to be Shortfuze.

As a kid, I loved reading the file cards. I used them and the comic to provide an outline for how I played with my Joes. I just think about this spazzy kid who had no clue and used to use Snake Eyes as a Cobra. "DAT'S WHY HE'S NAMED SNAKE EYES AND HE'S ALL BLACK LIKE BAD GUYS ARE!" Then he'd have SE speak in a robot voice. He also said I was gay because I had a Scarlett figure. Whatever, dude.
